Installing / Running BOINC without admin rights?

Is that possible? :) I have a hyperthreaded CPU and would of course like to get BOINC to take advantage of it while WCGA can't do it.

Thx in advance!

Re: Installing / Running BOINC without admin rights?

That possibility would open up doors to install BOINC on machines in a hidden state without being the owner and without approval. Don't think that is a desired path or?

You need admin rights to install.

However, you can copy an installation from one computer to another without admin rights.

Re: Installing / Running BOINC without admin rights?

I don't understand that. Why does it need admin rights anyway? Could just use my normal user rights, if what Didactylos suggests works. Well probably the wrong forum here for discussions like that. Thank you guys for your help.

Re: Installing / Running BOINC without admin rights?

No, here is a good place for BOINC discussions :-)

BOINC wasn't originally designed to handle restricted user accounts well. This led to the installer requiring admin rights as a prerequisite. But the actual BOINC executables don't need many rights to run (except possibly on Vista).

Since BOINC doesn't rely on the registry, BOINC installations are portable. You have to set up startup shortcuts and things manually, but that's not hard.

This applies to a single user installation. Service installations are a whole different ballgame.
