Each time WCG upgrades the science version, you're likely required to do it again.... fortunately the HPF2 science is mature, so it wont happen anytime soon. As far as I could see since I ran WCG the science applications are "under Boinc.exe's responsibility" for ZoneAlarm (ZAAV 7.0.337 for me). It is Boinc.exe which requires the authorizations and the many science applications which have run in my machine since the beginning appear in ZA's programs control list with question marks in all columns. So, normally, you do not have to give a new authorization unless you install a new version.of Boinc. Cheers. Jean. |

Screenshot of 7.1.078 with 4 of the 5 WCG sciences showing. They were added with 4 ? like yours, but on my initial one time allow from a pop-up screen. Have changed the trusted zones to V. Logically, if a new version appears, expect for a new pop-up to show (Sunbelt always has).
----------------------------------------One more i added manually (AC@H) in case (outside chance) it shows up in my absence asking for my permission. Oddly ZA said it was not a proper program and does not, like HCC, show a source description as to who made it (product name field remains blank too). Sunbelt PF is identical in behavior (though not available for Vista yet) and have just located Comodo latest Free Firewall (Pro is offered for free presently) which is going to get a few test weeks in the near future on Vista. No better way to learn how it stands up.

I tried again to find why ZA behaves differently in your computers, and more precisely why it is trusting the Boinc client in mine. The only setting which might explain it is that the Trusted Zone level is set to Medium (the default) in the Firewall section.
----------------------------------------Since ZAAV needs registration and money (not much) I also have access to their SmartDefense Advisor feature but I do not think it is the explanation since it does not seem to know the Science Applications more than Boinc. |

JmBoullier, the science application communicates with BOINC via shared memory, not TCP RPC.
Bryanp, sorry for the off-topic rambling. I'm not familiar with Comodo either, so anything you can tell us will be very useful. |

Comodo is here http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
I've been using it for over a year without problem. The "rosetta" popup from Comodo stops WCG because it awaits a response from me. Comodo has the same as Zone Alarm: Allow/Deny/ Remember etc. The first time I allowed it because I knew it was WCG. Got the flashing. Second time I disallowed it, still got the flashing. As I said in my previous post, I'll wait and see. Maybe nothing else will occur. All is OK at the moment. Thanks for the interest as I do want to keep contributing to the projects. |

Thanks for the help Didactylos.
----------------------------------------JmBoullier, the science application communicates with BOINC via shared memory, not TCP RPC. But the sci. app. is launched by Boinc.exe, no? And it talks to somebody (BoincMgr?) via RPC? Otherwise I do not see why ZA would be concerned at all (at least in Sekerob's machines)? Jean (not arguing but trying to understand better.) |

Just removed Sunbelt on one machine and replaced with Comodo Firewall Pro. Same Same as with Bryanp, pop up allow allow thru FAAH & HPF2 science and the 'remember' and, the pleasant part, a box to indicate the type of application. Overall first impression on Comodo are for it to be better featured than ZA. Will see if these boxes return.

Hello JmBoullier,
My understanding is that BOINC and the science applications use shared memory to communicate, since they are on the same computer. This can cause problems if the OS only allows very limited shared memory and there are a number of different applications running. But BOINC Manager uses the internet protocol to communicate with boinc.exe. This allows applications on other computers, such as BoincView, to communicate with boinc.exe. Lawrence |

What ever the scheme of communication, at least having been brought to fetch the present Comodo Firewall Pro, for free http://www.comodo.com/index.html, has revealed that it's a much more configurable package, learns, alerts all now processes, and permits for them to run as trusted, isolated and a few more modes....
----------------------------------------So far after 6 WCG jobs, each science popped up only once at first time and was told to assume the 'trusted application' signature. Even a feature to manually add a Trusted Application, tried it on DDDT, so will see if is passes the test without alerting. Coincidently with the monthly patch, there was also great use of the special 'Installation Mode' so one does not get beeped every 5 seconds to permit one or the other Woz patch of which there were many this month. for now it looks like bye bye ZoneLabs for me.
