Today I had to Ctrl-alt-del to end BOINC. This is the first time, but I've had suspicions that the PC is not working as well after installing BOINC. Here follows the messages. It goes on in the same vein for about another 50 odd lines:

Hi Bryanp,
----------------------------------------Did you try a reboot as per the log suggestion? DLL load errors are very suspicious. cheers Seizing Up or Ceasing up .... someone will jump on me for mixing this up.

Not jumping on you, but if it seizes up it will cease to function.

It's a metaphor from an engine or something mechanical - moving parts "seize" (stop moving) if they aren't lubricated properly.
It would be useful to know which DLL isn't loading. |

Today I had to power off because when I allowed WCG through my firewall I then got a continually flashing screen. This is the second time this has occurred. If the stability of my PC is going to be affected by this BOINC program, I'm going to have to withdraw. I never had these problems with the previous client. Any ideas?

Continually flashing screen? I have no idea what you are talking about. Can you be a little more precise? What is flashing?
If you are talking about ZoneAlarm - well, that's a flaw in ZoneAlarm. It responds to local traffic when all other firewalls ignore it. |

When I clicked Allow on my firewall to allow the file access - rosetta was in the file title so I knew it was WCG- my display then starts flashing to the BOINC window then to blank and back again about 1 sec flash. CTRL-alt-del will not stop it. The only thing is to power off. I don't have Zone Alarm and I don't get this reaction from any other program. Does that explain flashing?

Hello Bryanp,
You have a unique problem. Nobody else has ever posted it. BOINC Manager accesses the client once a second (the heartbeat) using a local loop internet connection (never leaves the computer). So what security programs do you have? Lawrence |

Tks for the reply. I'm running Comodo Firewall Pro, Avast AV. At the moment BOINC is running this (copied from messages):
11/12/2007 5:50:16 a.m.|World Community Grid|Restarting task lk766_00008_9 using hpf2 version 518 11/12/2007 5:50:16 a.m.|World Community Grid|Restarting task X0000053340019200507201308_0 using hcc1 version 515 without any problems. The flashing only seems to occur when Comodo asks for access for a program with the word "rosetta'" (?) in it. Next time it occurs I'll get more details from Comodo. Hopefully it won't happen! So I'll play a waiting game. |

It's surely wcg_hpf2_rosetta_5.18_windows_intelx86. Some firewalls or AV will interpret it as attempts of code injection or similar, but it is innocent (PC internal) application comms with the BOINC core client.
----------------------------------------Don't know Comodo (Italian for "Comfortable"), but having used various software firewalls, you can get rid of the blinking by setting up an exemption rule. Zonealarm e.g. has pop up window and asks Allow which also has a 'Remember my Decision' box. Each time WCG upgrades the science version, you're likely required to do it again.... fortunately the HPF2 science is mature, so it wont happen anytime soon. cheers Edit: Removed RPC reference.
