One of my BOINC agent cancer installations, the only one on a WXP OS, is exhibiting repeated C++ runtime errors. Do I need to manually dump the current work unit to get this machine running normally?
A new (30 days) W2K machine exhibited a black-screen system freeze fault, unattended, over the weekend. This was a complete system freeze - not a screen saver fault. Had to do everything, right down to clearing the CMOS, before the system would show life again with the same hardware. I've already uninstalled the BOINC program from a W98 machine, after repeated OS crashes. I didn't really expect much help with this, so just reinstalled the UD agent. All three systems ran (apparently) faultlessly 24hrs/7days running the UD agent, and a slower fourth system continues to do so. The restored W98 system shows no further problems. Wth all this agent migration, the device roster now shows defunct UD and BOINC devices, with apparently no method of de-listing them. RL |

----------------------------------------Would you plz delete the duplicate post from the Help Conquer Cancer forum, so we can focus our support energy on one thread. If you still have the BOINC program directory, can you plz find the stdoutdae.txt file and post the content. The C++ report is new, cant remember seeing any before, so can you please be more detailed in what the exact messages are/were. Running the graphics does require updated display drivers, particular OpenGL. That could throw a spanner in the wheel for old systems. W98 is approached with: If it runs it runs, but BOINC developers themselves have stopped testing for full backward compatibility. Consequently, it's hard to maintain full support for this OS. That said, UD agent is a dead end street. UD aka UnivaUD pulled their hands off, dropped it like a hot potatoe, thus once the current projects that were originally started on UD run out, it's the end of the road for this agent. Unused devices will disappear from view after 7 or 14 days ttyl Added: The newest agent of 5.10 is not a must. 5.8.16 has less bells and no Simple View GUI, but it was developed with W98 still being supported. UD may have had the same problems; it suppresses errors like these, and doesn't report them to the user. Not what you want to hear, I know.
But unless others are experiencing similar errors, the first suspect is your own computer. I second Sekerob's request for more precise error details. Neither UD nor BOINC can directly cause a system freeze, but the additional load that crunching places on your computer can highlight existing hardware problems. Can? It does! Some of my teammates use BOINC for burn-in testing. If nothing blows up* while running BOINC flat out, then it's probably safe to put into production ;-) * it was a faulty power supply, from a batch of known faulty power supplies. So, not something the average user needs to worry about. |

re C++ rruntime error.
This XP machine is currently displaying the fault, and the WCG BOINC agent is stalled at 7hr 48min 55sec (3hr 48min 55s to go). From experience, clearing this error results in the agent restarting the work unit from t=0. The runtime error repeatedly occurs at around the same 7+hr work unit time stamp. The 'Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library' error message window states: Runtime Error! Program:...orldcommunitygrid.org\wcg_hcc1_img_5.15_windows_intelx86 abnormal program termination ............. The current fault occured Dec04 sometime between 1330 and 1350. The previous fault was reset about 1530 the previous day. Aha! "Task X0000045160304200502042001_0 exited with a DLL initialization error."
It seems BOINC has "improved" the handling of this error in the latest BOINC version. This really doesn't say much for the way it was handled before :-( This would be easy to debug on Linux, less so on Windows. Unless you are prepared to do some further detective work, I'm going to kick this over to the WCG techs - although their response may take a while. If I had to guess, I'd say you are missing CRT71. |

My wife's machine just got a couple of these. However, she's currently using Word Perfect 12, which historically does not get along well with BOINC. We usually have to snooze it, at least. Upon the second error, I exited BOINC over there so she could get her work done and BOINC ceases to be an excuse for an error.
----------------------------------------Later, when Word Perfect is closed, I can watch BOINC again for C++ errors when nothing else is running.

I'm sure. I've noted both the elapsed time and time remaining in all cases. I note that time remaining may not decrement when the simple view window is displayed.
