Re: Just installed BOINC, now ZoneAlarm shows constant traffic

Refer to my earlier post:

Get the free 7.0.408 and operate the Check for Updates button in the GUI's right margin and it delivers 7.1.078 to your doorstep. Talk about comodo.

Not for me and my XP. Apparently right now, it's only for Vista machines.

Re: Just installed BOINC, now ZoneAlarm shows constant traffic

I've got a question. Yeah, I know this thread is over a year old... but I hate starting new threads.

I usually kill BOINCmgr.exe but recently I discovered something interesting. There is another way to stop the "constant traffic".

I do not have BOINC set up to start on reboot. For one reason or another, I had to shut down ZoneAlarm. I started BOINC, then I remembered ZA.

ZoneAlarm did not show the usual traffic.

I rebooted and tried it again. Same thing - no traffic.

Now why is there a difference in the showing of traffic depending on which program is started up first?

Didn't you ask this before? Maybe I'm just losing my mind.....

Technically speaking, it seems probable that ZA works by proxying the socket connection. If BOINC Manager acquires a socket before ZA starts, then it wouldn't be able to proxy it. Of course, ZA ought to break any existing connections, but that would probably cause noticeable disruption.

This is just a guess.
