Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Linux is better than Windows for points

in a virtual machine on a Windows host is better than native Windows for points

I have a few questions as i'm not that familiar with Linux, though i have run it long ago in a duel boot configuration which did not work well as i ended up having boot problems after a few updates several times.

Which virtual machine application is best on windows 10.
Is it worth doing on an I3 with hyper-threading on. The I3 runs 4 tasks at a time in windows.
Does Linux support hyper-threading.

Is it worth doing on a quad core and should i still run 1 task on the host (windows 10)

I have applications that only run in windows so Linux as a stand alone OS will not work for me.

1 I have only ever used virtualbox
2 It is a very long time since I heard of anyone testing but HT on was worth 130% points and double runtime
3 yes linux likes HT
4 No need to run Boinc on host unless you are prone to power outages
I have one windows rig for similar reasons

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

So, Base Campers
News from the XS Trek and the 14th anniversary challenge

End of day two and rumour control is saying that the top five teams are showing a strong and consistent performance.

Barring some unforeseen disaster, Byteball already have this won. With an hourly average of 4,473,850 they are outstripping their rivals by a wide margin

In second place Xtremesystems have settled to an average of 1,558,566 per hour for the day and have a healthy lead over 3rd place of 40,102,879. It seems unlikely that teams behind can mount a better than 334,190 per hour increase to overtake

In third place Team China have fallen away from the challenge with a 24 hour average of 942,660 At that rate they will not finish third. By the end of day 4 they will be 5th.

The current 4th and 5th placed teams are battling it out

In 4th, Biblepay averaged 1,589,951 per hour today but....

In 5th, Gridcoin marginally out-produced them with 1,590,776 per hour a difference of just 824 points per hour

So, with a lead of 1,006,519 and 120 hours to go Biblepay should do it as Gridcoin need to be averaging better than 8,387 an hour more than their opposition. Can they do it?

Watch closely boys and girls, it is not quite written in stone yet

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

little mermaid,

TLD,

I do not know anything about virtual machines, but when it comes to using windows programs under Linux, there is WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator). It's pretty complicated to set up, but its advantage, as its name suggests, is that it's not an emulator. It simulates the registry, etc., but it stays Linux running, and the associated performance.

Just for information, if it can help you migrate to Linux, it's still better. But inquire before, that WINE, it's quite a story to configure it as one wants (we want ?).

peace

OldChap,

Votre team 2ème, ça me ferait plaisir, comme SNURK and friends qui a été 4ème au THOR challenge.
--------
Thank you for the statistics, that I think we are very much not paying too much attention. Finally, personally, the moments that my two PCs are thoroughly, apart from participating in the forum, I do not do more. But it's nice to see that we participate in that! Your team 2nd , it would make me happy, as SNURK and friends who was 4th in the THOR challenge.

good luck

I have Mediaportal (a program that allows me to access TV, videos, TV, record TV and music) on the computer with the I3, many have tried to get it working with wine and failed. It also has a TV server that will not work with wine.

I edit video on the other desktop with a 2.4 G quad core, The video editor i use uses CUDA on my video card to edit and convert video very fast. I had to customize the driver to get CUDA to work as it doesn't work with the newer Nvidia drivers. So not likely to work under wine.
I did install Ubuntu on this machine in a virtual machine as i only edit video a few hours a day and can shut down the virtual machine when i am editing video.

Many people are smart enough to live their lives without being controlled by a smartphone, stefada,
- mine is not as water resistant as yours - she should be - still she survived going under water once
shock

Good Morning Base Campers!
Business
I'm pleased to report that XtremeSystems has been joined by
616westwarmoth
for whom Base Camp at once put a trek badge aside

OldChap's report sounds so reassuring - a #2 would be beyond my xpertly uninformed xpectations
But it never hurts to secure the position, so
- this being Sunday -
after church, please join
XtremeSystems - and we'll have a coffee cup of coffee or better at the pub opposite that church

TLD,

It was just for information, that if it's complicated to configure WINE, usually the programs go faster with that under windows.
But you seem to have already looked at the question, so that's not helpful. Especially if you already had problems with the graphics card (the drivers, it's really the limit to switch to Linux).

blushing

little mermaid,

Beside, he is very solid. That I counted how many times he fell in the river, but did not fall short. With a 'modern' phone, I should have changed at least 100 times!

What surprises most people is that I have neither radio nor TV! I really do everything with my PC, this is what I have most valuable after Louloup.

14th Birthday Challenge

Bienvenu 616westwarmoth !

Welcome 616westwarmoth! Together we will be able to overcome all obstacles.

good luck

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

I like that picture, stefada smile
Also, I know many who want to keep a phone a phone and not a newspaper, a cruncher, a navigator, an emergency apparatus, a camera, a post office, a TV-set, a flight radar, a grammophone, an excersice registrator, an address book, a movie theatre, a calculator, a bank ....
Geezzz, often I wish I didn't cross that fine line - and it doesn't even have Facebook on it crying

Good Morning Base Campers!
Business
The day starts on a positive note, because we can say

à Urden - such a pleasant surprise. I thought you had forgotten us.
When the XtremeSystems trek is over, you can add this badge to your collection smile

How is your new work, Urden?

As of midnight UTC XtremeSystems sat on a fairly comfortable #2 spot.
I have no idea how to calculate our chances, but idea Forrest Gump and idea I know that sticking with
many little streams form a large river
is good policy cowboy
We shall be happy for any help you can send our way love struck
We may not win, but we may keep our honourable #2 position cool
