Why on earth does it need to communicate with itself CONSTANTLY? I could see 60/30/15 minutes, but constantly? C'mon!?
Is there any way to schedule BOINC's self-communications, during uploads/downloads or perhaps at every x number of minutes? |

Hey debs,
----------------------------------------BOINC uses RPC to "talk to itself" - this is normal behavior https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16623#131528 [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 2, 2007 10:43:48 PM] |

That doesn't answer the "why" it must be constant instead of every x minutes. That just states that it does communicate with itself constantly.
So I'm guessing your answer is that there is no way to schedule these self-communications. Is that on a wish list for future versions? |

Sorry there isn't any way around it (per BOINC developers - I'll try to find the thread for you). Are you using Zone Alarm?

Quote from link given above:
...that you can set BOINC's parts in the exclusion zone in ZA these days. Then it won't register on ZA's system tray icon. How do I do that? I'm using ZA 6.5.731.000. Quote from link given above: Install BOINC as a service and only use the Manager when you need to check on it. Is there a way to do that without re-installing? Or do I need to re-install? |

Here's a link to an FAQ Informational I wrote a little while back. Hope it helps to get past the WOE phase.

I don't use the windows version, but with the Linux version the constant traffic that shows up is the manager (the graphical window) talking to the client. What it's doing is updating the information you see on the screen (time left, etc.), which is why it can't just do that ever 15 minutes.
On Linux you can just close the manager (leaving the daemon running) and the traffic disappears. Try closing as much stuff as possible without actually exiting BOINC (is there a system tray icon? try to disable it). |

That will only work if you do a 'service' install on windows allowing the exiting of the BOINCmgr GUI without shutting down the core client and the science. I've never heard if ZA would not show the core-client to science heartbeat which is once per second. BOINCmgr simply reads out what the core client is recording anyhow. At times BOINCmgr can loose contact with the core client due blockages by the firewall, hence the permission needs.
