Question about 64-bit

I have amd64x2 on which I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 and Boinc Manager 5.10.8

When investigating a recent problem on my machine, I noticed there was a process called:

wcg_hpf2_rosetta_5.20_i686_pc_linux_gnu

So does i686 work run on amd64 machines? Normally I expect to see x86_64 and not i686

Re: Question about 64-bit

WCG has only 32bit sciences and has configured the server to allow certain 64 bit platforms to run the 32 bit sciences. The premiss is that certain 32bit libraries are on the client system and given you are running fine, you must have had them in place.

Re: Question about 64-bit

Yes, x86 software runs on x86-64 machines. This includes things like operating systems, which is why 32-bit windows works any processors which have come out in the last two years.

Linux does seem have trouble running 32-bit software if you don't have the 32-bit libraries installed, but apparently you do.
