Does the BOINC agent for Windows include "update" feature? If not, where can I check which version of the BOINC is the latest one? Also, if I install a new version of the BOINC over the current one, won't it discard the current task?

There is not an automatic update in place. Simply follow the
---------------------------------------- button on the WCG home page to get a listing of the latest WCG supported versions. Select the desired version for the relevant OS and install over the old agent. The program will even stop the agent if it is still running and restart it afterwards and continue where you left off.

Now this is a really neat, well thought out procedure for sure:
