Support for off-line computers

I have seen several times that occationally there is problems getting the BOINC to get a new work unit. The other day I found out that getting the Project Server to release a work unit could also be a problem. Now, in winter, we heat the House with electricity, so I pulled an old unit from the shelf and set it up running. Then ... there was some message that ... >>Your Computer is running 12.87678536% of time, you allcoate 50% to WCG and ... a new work unit will not complete in time!!! crying On this computer I run WIndows 2000 and BOINC, nothing else, and no keyboard or screen. It has been sitting a month or two on the shelf though! The "other project" is set to "load no more work units..."; this is a spare in case the WCG server refuses work units. It has happened before that loading a work unit is a problem.

I have some off-line computers, that must be manually connected to the Internet, and I must sit in front of them and wait until communitacion is complete. Various delays and no control of work buffer is a real problem; the BONIC can sometimes, but not always, make a valid estimate of what to do.

My suggestion is that: If the WCG server have spare disk space for accounting of work units, if it please would be possible to attach to the project with a human-friendly deadline, of the work units, and possible to have some manual control + estimate of how much to load in the work buffer. My thought is a Month deadline, and WCG server always release additional work units if a manual request is made. This should of course not be used for the computers that are on-line; the computers now attaced to WCG server.

Re: Support for off-line computers

This can happen if the time the computer is used changes. Could it be in this case that it was formerly running constantly? It is now running only 3 hours per day, so BOINC figures that it can't complete in time now, based on the previous computation when the work was downloaded.

If I have been out of town and the computer was off for a few days (like yours was on the shelf), I see things like this. Most or all workunits manage to get done.

There is some slack built-in to the WCG due date, so it should eventually sort itself out. BOINC will probably send no more work until it aligns itself with your new schedule.

If you have workunits beyond the due date, you might as well abort them and get new ones, especially if they haven't run yet.

Re: Support for off-line computers

There's a couple things you can do. The easiest option is to uninstall BOINC, delete the BOINC program folder and then re-install. You'll start fresh and BOINC will behave more normally.

The second option is to edit your client_state.xml and client_state_prev.xml files. Simply change the relavent items such as on_frac and active_frac to 0.999xxxxx. Make sure you don't change the number of digits after the decimal. Make a backup of these files before editing them too.

Re: Support for off-line computers

... the problem was that some of the computers I run on do not
have a constant on-line Internet connection.
I must sit down and manually connect the computer.
So I need a 15-20 DAYS work buffer, so when I eventually connect
I can upload/download, and the machine run always.
The BOINC will work just fine then.

Re: Support for off-line computers

Hello Protego,
BOINC will not download more work units than it can process within the deadline, plus a safety margin. Since most work units aredue in 9 days, that makes it hard to download more than 7 days worth.
