BOINC as a Service

A couple of questions abot running Boinc as a service.

1. Does it still run as per the Prefrence settings?
2. How do I 'see' what is happening, as in what I can see in Boincmgr? Is boinc manager still capable of being run then exited when you have 'seen' what is happening?

TIA. cool

Re: BOINC as a Service

Done the first one last week using 5.10.22 WCG package providing 'service' as option.

1. The client still acts according the profile it is associated with
2. BOINCmgr still has full functionality if started.
3. The graphics button is disabled
4. The Screensaver only shows WCG logo (if opted to have BOINCscr) and name project/progress percent.
5. You cannot end the service with BM. Has to be done with the net stop/start command.
6. You can start and exit BM without it effecting the service continuity (you could start as many extra instances in Single/Shared user mode and exit all but the 1st one starting the client).
7. If you use cc_config.xml for extra manual options, make a backup of that file before service installation and restore if need be afterwards. Unless fixed in an silent update, the early WCG 5.10.22 release caused the overwrite of this file (had that on one happening).
8. Cant kill the service with TM, but can with Process Explorer (on windows).... dkw and not recommended.

That's what i've established so far.

Edit: Added point 8

Re: BOINC as a Service

Thanks Sek, seems just what I want. I have established that when Boinc is run with the "Do not run with User active" set to 5 mins. Boinc then does not seem to interfer with son's games...but he still has a habit of ending itjust to make sure!

So I will probably install as a service, with "Do not run still set, then start BM so he thinks when he exits from that he kills the process!!! devilish devilish devilish

Re: BOINC as a Service

When installing as a Service, what is meant by the Domain/Username bit? And are there anymore of these funny questions?

Not into this 'service' bit so I do not have a clue blushing

Re: BOINC as a Service

An RTFM visit does come to mind wink It should default to the user that is performing the install, which should be one with admin rights. Mine showed the ComputerName/AdminName. Somewhere a few days ago i posted a screenshot.

The BOINC launch box is for the BOINCmgr and have asked to change the text in the installer to remove ambiguity. Think if you select it, it will create a shortcut in the Start-up folder, but not tested it.

Re: BOINC as a Service

Fire up the Control panel for User Accounts which should list all that are set-up on your system and the level of Authority. If your computer is called Scribe-01 (system panel screen should show that) and your normal log-in is Alan it would look like "Scribe-01/Alan"

I do hope you have a login, because service install wont work for a password-less account.

Re: BOINC as a Service

Well that's it then, no go as the PC does not have any passwords. Why have a password with only one account and user?

Re: BOINC as a Service

It's easy enough to set up a new account just for BOINC. Just yell if you want a how-to.

Re: BOINC as a Service

That would be great Didi....I need a step by step and it must not interfere with my son's normal use and be invisible at boot-up....
