Open Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management
Navigate to Local Users and Groups -> Users Create a new user. Call it "BOINC". Set the password to "never expires". For simplicity, add it to the Administrators group. Then, when you install BOINC, set the service account to Scribe-01/BOINC and use the password you just set. |

When I start the service install it shows it is requesting <domain>/User.
What exactly does domain refer to? |

If your computer belongs to a domain (it doesn't) then this would be the domain name. Normally, for local accounts you can omit the domain, but I'm afraid the BOINC installer requires it. For local accounts, the domain is the computer name. "localhost" or any other alias might work too, but it's best to use the computer name.
BOINC usually fills it in for you. |

A final point about creating an account for BOINC: You may want to prevent the account showing up on the Welcome screen, or interfering with automatic login. To do this, open Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy and include the BOINC account in "Deny logon locally".
I haven't tested this, and you will need 2000, XP or Vista Professional or better. |

I slashed the other way, (downwind) but Sid still came back!
I think I am going to give this up. Whoever said installing as a service is easy needs their head examined! ![]() |

Scribe, we'll refrain from commenting on the base security omitting way the subject PC is/was configured. Your luck will run out more in near future: BOINC 6.0 WILL install by default in service mode and will create 2 specific BOINC user accounts.
----------------------------------------Note to self: Make wide circle to avoid unwanted cranial examinations.

You're doing it wrong! :-o
Seriously, I've never had an issue with this. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the problem is. I suppose I could use Remote Assistance to check your configuration myself. |
