Ecuador's Yasuni Park: Oil Exploration or Nature Protection?
Manuela Omari Ima, a Waorani woman from the Ecuadorian Amazon, was born in the Yasuni National Park, a 2.5 million acre primary tropical rainforest at the intersection of the Andes, the Amazon and the Equator. That intersection is also the heart of a struggle between two plans: one for oil exploration and another that would permanently protect one of the most biologically diverse regions of the planet......... |

More appropriate for the 'Greenies' thread, IMHO. That thread is the central debate on the topic. I don't believe this thread's intention was to debate at all, but rather just post news relating to ecology. IMHO this is the central issue. Al Gore and Justice Barton were both right and wrong. Esotric and the other environmentalists are right. Al Gore's main mistake was to make the situation seem hopeless and thereby make it seem useless to attempt to put it right. Let us, for example, allow aircraft to fly triangular routes to avoid returning home empty. Lower the congestion charge for vehicles that cross the plaza fully loaded and the VAT on recycled goods. Do for paper, plastic and other recyclable materials what has for a long time been done for glass and some newsprint - tinge green what has been recycled and is still recyclable and (e.g.) brown what has been recycled to the limit http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7502071.stm [Edit 4 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 28, 2008 1:28:07 PM] |
