Snap a redwood photo, help a scientist
Next time you take a picture of a redwood tree, you might be doing more than snapping a vacation memory. You might be taking part in a massive science project to help redwoods survive into the next century and beyond. A team of scientists and environmentalists Friday is set to announce a sweeping new citizen-science effort that aims to enlist thousands of members of the public -- armed with cellphones and digital cameras -- to build a vast new catalog of the world's redwoods. The project, spearheaded by Save the Redwoods League in San Francisco and dubbed "Redwood Watch," will create a detailed map showing where individual redwoods live so that over the next century, as the climate continues to warm, scientists can track how the trees react and how their range shifts..... |

The Art of Listening: Secrets From 17 Years of Silence
The activist John Francis didn't speak for almost two decades. His new book, and his talks, show us what he learned. In 1971, after the devastating 800,000-gallon oil spill in the San Francisco Bay John Francis then a young man, pledged to never ride a motorized vehicle again. Two years later, he added voluntary silence to his vow, spending 17 years in silence as he walked the world and became known as The Planetwalker. The first words that he spoke again were in Washington, D.C., on the 20th anniversary of Earth Day. In 2009, Francis, by then a National Geographic fellow with a Ph.D, told his remarkable story in the candid and deeply inspirationalPlanetwalker: 22 Years of Walking. 17 Years of Silence. This year, Dr. Francis is back with the highly anticipated and most excellent follow-up The Ragged Edge of Silence: Finding Peace in a Noisy World a powerful and poetic exploration of the beauty of our world and our place in it, and a timely antidote to our increasingly networked, ping-scored existence. Finding Peace in a Noisy World ( Video ) For a moving glimpse of Francis's unusual story, don't miss his excellent 2008 TED talk:John Francis: I walk the Earth |

WASTELAND
In the world's largest garbage dump, Artist Vik Muniz finds beauty in resilience, art in compassion. Returning to his native Brazil, he finds himself along the outskirts of Rio de Jeneiro, amidst the garbage pickers of the Jardim Gramacho landfill. Determined to help, Muniz creates wildly creative, intimate portraits of the garbage pickers to sell back in New York. All the money earned goes to his subjects. "Think about what you are going to do when you get out of Jardim Gramacho," he tells one woman from behind the camera lens. Her hard stare cracks into a smile. The documentary features the lives of the garbage pickers and how they are able to fuel their creativity and sense of identity amidst the wasteland represented by their surroundings.....****** • ACADEMY AWARD® NOMINEE BEST FEATURE DOCUMENTARY • "WASTE LAND" IS A MUST-SEE!
