Locked up Work Units

Has anyone noticed work units for this project locking up on a Mac and going to sleep. If I stop and restart the Boinc client work resumes. I have this with a half dozen work units in the past few weeks, maybe it's just me.

Re: Locked up Work Units

Updated to the latest Boinc Client on the MAC. Problem still happening with frequency. To the point where am moving this machine back to work on Aids to confirm if the problem is specific to this project. I haven't seen this problem occurring on any of the other projects.

Re: Locked up Work Units

"Latest Client" is a very stretchable defenition with BOINC. Can you tell us the specific number and where obtained (Here at WCG or at Berkeley?)

The DDDT science was just updated to v 5.10 for all platforms, so was it that version (See Tasks tab of BOINCMgr)?

Going to sleep of the machine is a consequence of idle CPU i suppose and energy saving mode kicking in. Can you visit the stdoutdae.txt file in the BOINC program dir and copy paste 10 records or so from before and after it locking up and shutting down. Maybe there is a clue there.

thanks

Re: Locked up Work Units

Since switching the Boinc client over to the AIDs project I have seen no lockups. The client is version 5.10.20.

I'm going to switch back to Dengue and see if the lockups return. If they do I will collect the data you requested.

By the way running the same client on Vista64, Vista32, and XP I saw no lockups with Denque, only occurred on Mac OSX.

Re: Locked up Work Units

Okay I switched back and after a couple of days I had a frozen work unit again. So I switched back to the Aids project and lo and behold after 5 days I had a frozen work unit on that as well (first time) so it's prolly not a Dengue problem. Looks like a Boinc Client issue on the Mac. This started with the 5.10 version on Boinc, prior to that no lockup work unit in over a year of running on the same Mac Mini.

Re: Locked up Work Units

The whole BOINC upgrade experience is a bit challenging. There's been reams and reams of fixes to BOINC since 5.10.20. For MAC there is 5.10.27 just out as is there a 5.10.27 with more fixes for Windows including a 'shared memory' related fix for Vista. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

WCG supplies it's own 5.10.22 with WCG skin. https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewDownloadBoinc.do

Give the Mac version a try and let us know.

cheers

PS, I had my first Vista shutdown and restart loss of 15 work units, 4 hours into the jobs and the rest probably cycling thru in seconds during startup and I did pre-apply all the Vista FAQ tweaks from the Start Here forum. Think the Vista Autoupdate boot had something to do with it.... it went off way too fast. angry

Off topic again, but when did you get Vista? wink

Btw I still have those same shutdown losses even with the Vista FAQ tweaks.

It CAME with a recently "On Sales" Quad.... to good to pass up. The WaitToKill Tweak has worked multiply times even after the bad event.... 60 seconds i started with. The loss was just poor behavior of the Woz AutoUpdate.... read the news what MS has been doing like installing Desktop Search on a Corporate network of 3000 PCs. Found a post at BOINC Dev using a little batch routine to shut down BOINC first and continue with closing:
Save the following batch file (.bat) and make a shortcut to it on the desktop. Use it instead of the real shutdown function on the start menu.

cd %PROGRAMFILES%BOINC
boinccmd --quit
shutdown -s -t 20

What it does is: goes to BOINC directory, uses boinccmd to stop the core client, then shuts down after 20 seconds. shutdown with -t argument even makes it show a countdown.

Increase the number of it continues to show erred out work at restart.

And i do stand with the jokingly meant "MEII". The hands on leaves nothing but a glossed up WXP taste..... within the first 30 minutes explorer crashed (this was before applying 24 patches!) will be downloading the LiveCD of Ubuntu Gutsy/7.10 shortly.

End of OFF topic. Going to put 5.10.27 to the test on this Vista box. At least I'll learn hands on what works and what does not work of the FAQ.... just added another item to that list.... LoL. The Admin advised that shortly the Help FAQ's will be added, the System Req reflecting support and expecting with that a new WCG BOINC packaged version.
