hi all. just registered today here and got a question.
i've read the other thread saying the percentage completed of this project. it seems to raise like ~2% each month. so is that mean that about in 4 years the research will be completed and AIDS patients can be cured?? and considering more people will join to this project within this 4 years, the research might be completed in less than maybe 3 years?? isn't that just too good to be true? then why they just started this kind of campaign just no long ago (?) even though AIDS existed for much longer before than this idea?? |

That would be a great prognosis..but don't think it works with such
scientific precision, We live and crunch in hope:) Chrissy ![]() |

I´m afraid they are not searching for a cure. I believe we´re just crunching this WU´s to find a better Hiv-Therapy with less side effects.
Iam sure we have to be patient for some more years to get the chance for a cure. By the way: Have a look at the Research-Menu....there are some more Infos about the Project. |

Hpl912,
Welcome to WCG! We are looking for therapies indeed. It seems that in order to find a cure, we need to look at an "active" mechanism that can selectively target and "hunt" the virus in the body. |

Personally I think that this is just one more step in a long fight against HIV.
We are taking thousands of computers power to analyse our enemys weaknesses so that we may one day defeat it. I belive that one day we will have a cure. Maybe tomorrow or a 100 years from now. |

Chris,
I agree with you. Anything we find is a step in the right direction. It will help us keep the virus at bay. However, I believe that the real cure would involve a process that, more importantly, selectively destroys the non-replicating (dormant) virus. Because the principle of operation of the current medications is to target and disrupt the actively-replicating virus. However, they are not effective against viruses that are "sleeping" and not replicating. So, in that case, technologies such as genetics, nanotechnology, immunology and even DNA silencing may come very handy. Nano-particles will be designed that get injected in the body and that will selectively bind to and destroy all HIV viruses in the body - "sleeping" and active ones. Not only that, but this treatment may be complemented by infusion of genetically-modified CD4 cells that have no binding receptors for the virus. DNA silencing may be used adjunct to the above in order to disrupt HIV's membrane protein creation. Overall, it looks like it may be a combination of treatments. But what we need to find is a "smart" medication to target the HIV virus in any shape or form. |
