Results returned milestones report ================================== newtod returned their 2,600th result ![]() Great job newtod! Retired members report ====================== m4dbra1n retired from the team. ![]() Shame, shame on you ... beware of bad Karma For the week as a team: Statistics Total Run Time Points Results Good day today! ********* The new "Cancer" project seems to run quite well. The run time averages appear to be settling down to around 8-10 hours. So far this project's roll out has gone quite well. Lots of "buzz" in the project forum about whether or not this is actually a "Cancer" project. But then there is always a lot of discussion about new projects and I, for one, think that is a very good thing!!!! Not much of a day for me. The "Dude" ran over me with a steamroller!! That's great Compudude ... keep it up! Coingames had a good day and Jonathan Figdor keeps climbing the ladder. The only milestone I can claim today is getting down into the 3K rank for points ... but I will take it!! Cheers! ![]() ![]() |

I had no idea that there were dustups in the forums! Everyone has been so friendly and nice so far – I thought that was just how things are. As far as the killing in the name of religion thing, that’s one of my main research interests. I’m so curious why people believe what they believe with such fervour that they would kill for those beliefs. Especially when it seems to me like there is no evidence to corroborate one’s beliefs. I think that your comments on abortion and moral absolutism are particularly sage. The issue of abortion is much more subtle than “abortions are good or abortions are bad.” No reasonable proponent of free choice is going to say that abortions are a good thing. And I would hope that no right to lifer would deny a raped woman the right to have an abortion. If you’re interested in the thoughts of an intelligent person of faith, check out Jim Wallis. If you type his name and The Daily Show into google, you’ll get an interview he did with John Stewart of The Daily Show. This Wallis guy is one of the most kind and intelligent people I know. I’m personally an atheist – in part because I have yet to be convinced that there’s a God, and in part because if there’s a God, how can he explain great tragedies like the Holocaust. Anyway, my thoughts are rather jumbled (thanks Seagram 7!) and I need to run, but if you want to talk more about any of these issues, post ‘em up. I’m sure I’ll have an opinion, and hopefully, a more thoughtfully articulated one Jonathan, an atheist studying for a DTS (hope I got that right). You gotta love the diversity in this world! I have to admit I like the approach Descartes (I believe it was him) took to that question. As I recall, it was (roughly) if I do not believe in God and he exists, I lose; if I believe in God and he does not exist, I have not lost; if I believe in God and he does exist, I win - thus I can only gain from believing in God. How you perceive the nature of God defines how many questions get answered. I think many of the answers for the "great" truths are reflected in the universe as it exists. God does not cause the great tragedies but he must allow them to happen just as a parent cannot prevent the mistakes of their child. Denying the child the right to make mistakes denies them choice and the chance to grow. To decide is to kill. A decision is a choice between two or more things. Choosing one denys ("kills") the other(s). Decisions have consequences. Growth arises from the consequences of our decisions. I suspect continued discussion may be best offline (email) as, while I welcome discussion in our team thread, I also do not want to digress it greatly from the purpose at hand. |

Well, time to "come down off the mountain" (before the thin air gets to me
---------------------------------------- ). It looks like the population in my PV jail is declining. I can't help but notice that it seems like this 201 batch of DDDT WUs seem to have a very high probability of spending any and more time there than the average WU. Could just be me though. I do hope the apparent current trend for the team continues as we do seem to be establishing ourselves at a new level of performance. Hope everyone has a great weekend!Hey, has anyone ever noticed how the gurus on the mountain tops are always on the top of very pointy mountains? At least in the comics anyway. That has to be rough on the hiney! Geez, I think the question of how they keep from sliding down the side of the mountain is one question I just as soon leave unanswered. ![]() |

Since I don't have your email, I'll throw out my last few thoughts in the forum and if they're too far afield of the forum's subject matter, feel free to delete them. My degree is actually and MTS (Masters in Theological Studies). Harvard offers two masters in religion degrees, the MTS (mine) and the MDiv (mostly for those who will pursue ordination in a religious organisation). I plan to get a PhD in philosophy later, so I don't think I'm likely to get ordained.
As far as Descartes goes, his argument is called "The Wager." What it suggests is that the benefits of belief in God far outweigh the possible consequences of Hell if one does not believe. The problem is that it creates a rather poor faith. Imagine going up to the pearly gates and meeting St. Peter (someone's gotta correct me if I'm wrong on names). He asks why you believed in God and you answer "Well, the benefits outweighed the harms." I doubt he would be pleased. Now imagine that you are an unbeliever like myself (but a good unbeliever, one who volunteers and generally tries to alleviate human suffering) and you find yourself in the same position. I would say to St. Peter "I led my life by humanist principles. Didn't Jesus say "That you do to the least of these (referring to the poor and the sick), you do to me?" And besides, there simply wasn't enough evidence that God exists." I don't think that believers are irrational - I just think that there is no knowledge about the existence or non-existence of God. All we have are our opinions. And opinions are like... you know everyone has one. The point is, I lost track of my point a while back there. If you're really interested in this theology stuff, I just published an article entitled "God and 'The Problem of Evil.'" If you would like, I can email it to you. Best, JPF Jonathan, an atheist studying for a DTS (hope I got that right). You gotta love the diversity in this world! So, in case you haven't all figured this out yet, I am technically retarded and am speeding towards the career path of "Absent-Minded Professor" at an alarming rate.

We have having the start of quite a notable weekend. Special congratulations to spikey_richie for reaching 1,500,000 points! parmesian has completed crunching for 25 years today! Our points continue to grow despite our settling back down into the mid to upper 50s for members returning results. Also, we are less than 130,000 points from another major milestone. Stay tuned to find out more tomorrow!
