At least my dial phone will not access the "punch 1 for Serbo-Croatian and punch 2 for Smoke Signals" that seems to be the only "service" option now. If you want a touch tone phone, it still costs "extra", even though that's simpler equipment for them. I have to pay it so that the computer will dial out. We finally got the Spanish-American War of 1898 paid for. The 3% excise tax for that was finally abolished in July of 2006.
----------------------------------------I'm trying to rollover an IRA from one bank to another. They won't do that directly any more, for some reason. One gave me some instructions on a sticky note to take back home. At the kitchen phone, the service puncher at the other place had insufficient options for what I actually wanted to do. I managed to get a person by hitting the star key a few times. They asked whether I could come into the branch where I opened the IRA and process my request. I said, "Sorry, that was three banks ago before they changed names several times. I'm in Texas anyway, and you're in Cincinnati." I had to send an e-mail message to another particular person. At the moment, he and another were "tied up". Is there only one person in the USA at that bank that could handle IRAs for the rest of the world? I did say that if they were tied up, we have some Texas Rangers here that could take care of that situation. That was a couple of days ago, and I hadn't heard any more from them after sending my e-mail.

I've problems with large organizations that think they can ignore you and do whatever they want. The surest way of getting their attention is to file a complaint with whatever government agency regulates them. Often the agency will have an online complaint form set up for that purpose.
----------------------------------------I checked into banks for Texas and this seems to be the right web page Texas Dept. of Banking. The email addresses are in step 2. When I've had to do this in the past - either for a local utility, insurance company or whatever, they've gotten back to me in 24 hrs - warp speed for a bureaucrat. And the people who contact you aren't the customer disservice ****** that you normally have to deal with. *Edited for inappropriate language* ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by TKH at Oct 8, 2007 12:49:31 PM] |

If the money ever leaves the IRA and does not go directly to another comparable type IRA, there are tax consequences. Some of the online investment services (Scott Trade, Amreitrade, E-trade, Schwab, etc) can handle it with an online rollover form. Many businesses have given up on customer service. That is what makes the online businesses so successful. If you can't get help anyway, why pay extra for it? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Most of my IRAs and 401K are in online mutual funds, and they are great.

These are some older ones left over in "banks" and I'll leave them diversified. I know. I'm not interested in the "penalty for early withdrawl" option. Even if I get involved, I think there's a small window to put it where it's supposed to end up.I was investigating a local credit union, and they only had a traditional IRA. They didn't even have a Roth IRA option. How quaint.

----------------------------------------If it goes back in in 60 days it should be no problem, especially if the receiving institution just take the check as received, if they can't (or don't want to) do a direct transfer.
