Just last night, a friend of mine (in this team) asked me "Whats the name of the protein on my screen?" and I replied "It has no name yet - you're the very first person to see it." and he went "cool!"
I guess that's part of why we do this - besides the competitive human nature. The competition accounts for the "crunching bug" while it's the novelty and nobleness of the project that makes us join in the first place. Okay, enough talk, get back to crunching! |

One more rank up tomorrow should be no problem, but I think we can hop up 2 ranks if it's a good day. Hopefully at this rate we'll square top twenty in... oh wait... tomorrow, or day after. When will we step into top 20? In 1 week or 2 weeks? I channge my estimate from 5 to 4, or 3 days from now. Of course, tomorrow we might prove me wrong I'll also like to set a team target for top 10 in terms of results, since we've gotten into 19th. I wager 2-3 weeks.Keep those processors crunching! Let's bring in some extra weaponry! |

Orca;
The only thing I have left to throw at this is a P3 laptop. I don't know if that is even worth it in terms of helping us jump another spot or two. I'm negoiating (pleading, whinning, bribing, kneeling, gifting) with my better half to let me buy an AMD FX 55 system. It would be three weeks before I see it, even if she lets me order it tomorrow. When I think how much I paid for a 5MB harddrive in the mid 80s or going back just a little further does anyone remember the 8 inch floppy drives or a little further the audio tape store, or a little further 80 col punch cards or a little further mag core memory- Ho! Hum. Does anyone remember wiring (literally) their programs and when we thought we had all the memory in the WORLD with 4K - on a mainframe no less, those were the days as a programmer you actually had to know something about the way the computer worked and you were really worried about how many clock and instruction cycles it took. Anyone remember writing self modifying code just so you could get the job to fit in 4K and the first time you saw 12K do you remember thinking what job could possibly fill it up. Oh! how little we knew. |

Heheh. I'm half expecting a secret supercomputer project to be unvield sometime soon that'd make the blue gene/l look like a pentium, and make all our AMDs and P4s look like non-science handheld calculcators, and make all handheld calculators look like 10-finger-counters.
And then, some bigtime corporation would unviel yet another super-supercomputer, and we'd have to coin the term megacomputer, then hypercomputer, then OWL(overwhelmingly large) hypercomputers, then massive OWL hypercomputer clusters, then who knows what next, with... say... twelve point three nine thrillian Yottabytes of optical RAM and a googolplex of data storage... cooled by silver heat pipes filled with liquid methane.. http://www.essex1.com/people/speer/large.html (googol/google = 1 x 10 ^100, googolplex = 1 x 10^googol) Then probably around then we'd become extinct for one reason or another Pentium 3s are actually quite good at providing bursts of points every coupla days or so... provided they don't exceed the server time limit. By FX 55, you mean graphics card? Noooooo!!! Nvidia FX's are prehistoric! The 6-series has overhauled the architecture, like the difference between a sampan and a kayak! And if you're getting AMD, don't miss out on the Nforce 4 SLI. If you're a gamer, you really, really, really won't regret it in the long run ![]() |

Hey guys,
----------------------------------------Gonna have to join in these forums more even though I cant get through them at work so i have to dial up on my phone which as you can guess is pretty slow! I think Hairy4Paws was refering to the AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 64Bit (2.6GHz) chip which is pretty hardcore so is the price tag! Lets hope they bring a 64-bit flavor of WCG out then we can start really using this technology if only for the extended memory addressing which is pretty much already supported in SP2. I'm running the windows xp 64 pro atm on my laptop which I must admin having two versions of ie (32/64-bit version) is too much choice I'm using them in turn as I dont want one to feel left out! As far as results I dont think they is any really advantage running on the 64-bit platform but It may be just my laptop been pretty slow! Team captain dave is a big fan of nForce since I introduced him back when the nforce 420 jumped in with dual memory mode! Now dave has more nforce 2 than nvidia! Totally agree with Orca about the nForce 4 SLI ultra! Unless you want to your a intel bod then you can always hit the nForce 5 SLI from the back! I'm running on the nForce 3 250 ultra atm at home and its a serious beast! which is only missing the SLI so my 6600 card will have to do until I can justify another system! which dropping from 3rd in the ranks to 7th in under a week! The time maybe now! But we will just have to wait as Pentium 4 is introducing there LGA-775 EM64T 64-bit addressing so I'm sure sooner or later the big guns will start releasing some un-nessary ud crunching process which no one can utilise than us! I think we are the only people who can walk into our local computer shop and say mmmmm 3ghz not sure that will do the trick! what you mean its only got 2gb of ram and no raid you trying to sell me a typewriter or something! Keep on crunching! remember crunching is a lifestyle choice! |
