For some reason, I cannot get work units. I am set up to work on dunge fever only so don't know if there are problems with it at wcg. I have reset my 4 core mac pro to use only 2 cores to keep the heat down. I currently have 2 work units left crunching now after my upload earlier today. Hit the update button to see if it would download anymore but no. My settings are to get 4 days of work. Any suggestions?

What message did the server return?
Did BOINC actually request more work? |

Just showed completed upload. Didn't even have a delay time to the server like it usually does. I hit the update button and states user request-not requesting new work even though I only have 2 WU's. I went ahead and changed my settings to request work from other projects if no work is available. I will connect shortly when 1 wu is completed and see if I get any more.

BOINC just doesn't think you need more work. If BOINC's not asking for work, the server won't send any.

Its definately a clitch. With 2 cores working, I should get around 20 work units for 4 days work. Should I reset it?

If you're using the simplified view, click on advanced view first. Then, noting the time, click on the update button with the WCG entry selected on the Projects tab. Now go over to the Messages tab and look at the end for around the time you noted above. Copy the messages from that point into a post here. That should give us a good start figuring out why you aren't getting new work. Don't reset yet.

My last 2 units finished. Connected with wcg, it uploaded the 2, then downloaded about 2 1/4 days worth. Not the 4 days I have set in my preferences. Ever since I upgraded to 5.8, been seeing lower number of wu's recieved that what I have set in my preferences. I'll let it ride a bit to see if it works itself out.

It's an estimate. BOINC takes quite a few things into account, and different versions end up queuing different amounts.
Don't worry about it. I find a good queue size is about half a day. |

They reworked things and it behaved a bit strangely. Go to 5.10 and try that. I'm seeing it much better behaved than 5.8. I think they tried to make 5.8 do too much thinking trying to protect the user from themselves. Also, connect to server values beyond 3.0 made 5.8 even worse about getting the expected amount of work you wanted. Drop that and you'll probably get some more work under 5.8. In the history of WCG, outages beyond a few hours are very rare. Actually, outages period (unscheduled that is) are rare. The worst case was the hardware problem in the middle of the blizzard outage back over the Christmas holidays last year or the year before. Even there, a three day work queue was just enough. |
