Hypothetical: I run UD now. I know everything is going Boinc eventually. I have a "single core" AMD Duron 1.6 GHz CPU. I run WCG Projects exclusively on my "D" drive, with all else on "C". Is it worth my while to go boinc. Or can I run both on the same drive ( not consecutively, of course)?!?

P.S. I already know where the read only threads are. Just want some current poop b4 I migrate my system in. I believe my performance will be better, that is more thorough, if I keep FA@H and HPF2 work units in UD. Is that a little more specific?!

I'm not sure what you are asking for, since there's "current info" all over the place. Performance is about the same for each but BOINC is a bit more automatic.
----------------------------------------At some point you will have no choice. It's BOINC or nothing. "leaving" the two projects in UD will not be an option when UD finally winds down. I suspect that it will be around long enough to finish those two.

I guess I'll keep ud, since I already have it. Thanks, retsof!

7cures,
----------------------------------------The prediction is that the BOINC WCG 5.10 (**) package to include the automatic deactivation or uninstall, both optional, should be available by end of September maybe somewhat later. WCG even had BOINC developers include some special coding specifically to help ease the transition. ** The waiting is for 5.10 to get sign-off by WCG. 5.10.20 got "recommended" status at Berkeley, but we've seen that before and show stoppers still cropping up. With this version it's really childs pay to connect, even the link address can now be selected from a drop down list. AND, of course if owner of a multi-core machine, use the idle cores. That's all the current P there is.

Well. I am pretty good. Both BOINC and UD running on my D drive. Because the system is constantly on, I have full control of what's running. With both running ( not simultaneous), and with about a one second run each b4 change up my CPU was running about 22 degrees C. Of course, this won't do since work units can't be turned in simultaneous. So, I will manually run each according to progress. I'll weight my decisions more toward UD until BOINC 5.10 arrives. I have used the online device profiles to tailor the system. BOINC projects will run on BOINC, with FA@H and HPF2 running on UD.
I will happily change FA@H to boinc, but is Threadmaster the only option as far as a sound CPU throttle for BOINC is concerned. I don't want product endorsement! Just an appraisal. See, my bottleneck is RAM memory. I only have 256MB. My virtual memory is flawless in operation, but drives don't defrag on the fly. And I do not like to defrag every day. My d drive is 14GB, so I think that will not be too serious a problem. I know all this may seem a bit anal, but i have one system, no steady job, and no means to purchase even the simplest hardware upgrades, ie; RAM memory. So, please be patient with me and all the questions. You all are great with the answers. ![]() |

BOINC has a built in throttle. If you check the device profile you should see the following:
----------------------------------------Use no more than: xxx% of processor time. You could give that a try, and see if it meets you needs. |

I downloaded BOINC 5.10.20 for Windows this evening.

For the interestees a snippet from the back room. Were before the agent division was 40/60 for BOINC/UD, the Sunday figures were per knreed:
----------------------------------------"We had our highest BOINC cpu time ever yesterday (in terms of validated run-time). We had 94.95 years of runtime validated. The current estimate for today is around 96.5 years (this was not reflected in the morning stats run due to the transitioner being down)." 95 CPU years for a Sunday translates to 54/46 on a total of 178 CPU years, which anyhow was a very strong weekend day result. Considering that BOINC reports true CPU time opposed to UD reporting wall-clock time, we're probably not far from a 60/40 flip flop. ![]()
