littlepeaks,
----------------------------------------I have comcast at home also (but no VOIP) and just the 'family pack' for TV (paying and extra around $30+ a month just to get to the Sci Fi Channel for Battlestar was a little much) ![]() This was actually run over my wireless connection. If I am directly connected to LAN it is usually around 28000 kb/s for downloads. edit: Here is performance on my Lan: ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by knreed at Feb 22, 2008 7:45:28 PM] |

Hi knreed--
----------------------------------------Actually, I am considering dumping Comcast, but maybe keeping the cable computer connection. My wife is Korean, and Comcast canceled the Korean TV station (MBC) in December-- said they moved to new ownership, and they had to sign a new contract with the new ownership. Most of the Koreans in this area cancelled their Comcast service and signed up with one of the Satellite services, which provides 4 Korean channels for $20.00 extra a month. A happy wife is definitely extra added value to a good cable package. [Edit 1 times, last edit by littlepeaks at Feb 19, 2008 4:44:06 AM] |

Ever heard of traffic shaping? Well here comes:
----------------------------------------Comcast Cheating On Bandwidth Testing? dynamo52 writes "I'm a freelance network admin serving mainly small business clients. Over the last few months, I have noticed that any time I run any type of bandwidth testing for clients with Comcast accounts, the results have been amazingly fast — with some connections, Speakeasy will report up to 15 Mbps down and 4 Mbps up. Of course, clients get nowhere near this performance in everyday usage. (This can be quite annoying when trying to determine whether a client needs to switch over to a T1 or if their current ISP will suffice.) Upon further investigation, it appears that Comcast is delivering this bandwidth only for a few seconds after any new request and it is immediately throttled down. Doing a download and upload test using a significantly large file (100+ MB) yields results more in line with everyday usage experience, usually about 1.2 Mbps down and about 250 Kbps up (but it varies). Is there any valid reason why Comcast would front-load transfers in this way, or is it merely an effort to prevent end-users from being able to assess their bandwidth accurately? Does anybody know of other ISPs using similar practices?"

One cannot exclude that they are pleased with the effect on Speedtest or other similar tools, but there are valid reasons too for doing such a short time boost:
----------------------------------------- speeding up short transactions and, thus, improving response times for truly interactive usage - minimizing the impact of heavy downloaders on the interactive community. And perhaps other less obvious (to me) reasons. But those two seem quite reasonable for keeping a network pleasant to use for the (probably vast) majority of people who are essentially surfing the net. As long as they do not advertise or sell their peak speed I find it quite fair. |

Thank you for sharing this about the Power Boost thing, makes it hard to compare results then.

From Virginia to New York, NY:
Ping: 20ms Download: 5198 kb/s Upload: 1860 kb/s From Virginia to Los Angeles, CA: Ping: 86ms Download: 5199 kb/s Upload: 1830 kb/s This is on a Verizon FiOS optical connection. I have the 5 down/2 up package, so it looks like I am actually getting what I pay for! |

The Power Boost is definitely a factor on Comcast. For grins I located one of the large files for AfricanClimate@Home and downloaded the over 100MB file via my browser to test the speed. Firefox reported 800kB/sec or 6.4Mbps which is much lower then what speed test reports.
Of course, it could also just be that everyone is loading their computers up with workunits for the weekend ![]() |
