I'd strongly suggest the team for this project do something about the BWDOWN problem. I'm on 6 MEG Adsl line and it says I don't have bandwidth which is BS. You are limiting yourself to a much smaller number of pc's on which to run. I run all the other WCG projects and none of them have this problem which points the issue towards this project only.

I asked the techs about this earlier, and they say that since there is only a limited amount of work for this project, the restricted number of available computers will be more than sufficient.

I'm not able to download any work for this project either. I have an adsl 8mb connection and it's telling me 2/09/2007 9:55:51 AM|World Community Grid|Message from server: Your computer reports a bandwidth of 0.0 kbps; AfricanClimate@Home requires 83.0 kbps.
Are you able to help? |

If you really want work from this project, follow knreed's instructions here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/printpost?post=125215
Please remember, though - there's no need to go to this trouble unless you want to. The work will be done one way or another. |

This BWDown problem really exists, but its effects might not be forcibly limiting effects.
---------------------------------------- Since I have only a 512 kb ADSL at this time I went straight to update the BWDown parm for being able to try ACH at least once. It's only after having forced 100,000 that I realised that the figure I had overtyped was 88,xxx, so it was already OK! Surprising, no? Between this operation and actually getting an ACH WU I have received a few DDDT WUs to keep crunching and just before I got this first ACH WU my BWDown was 91,2xx. And after receiving all the stuff (20 mn!) it is currently 97,879. Regarding your case, All Knowing Eye and whocrazy, would you have other activities using all or part of your bandwith by chance? E.g. music or video streaming, p2p, or big software downloads as far as your computer is concerned, or even VOD or DSL TV in parallel to your computer link on the same ISP link? Cheers. Jean. |

We know that BOINC doesn't measure download as well as it should. We have worked with the BOINC developers to improve this. The code improvements are in currently in the 5.10.20 client that is not yet ready for broad use. We hope that this will be released soon and we hope to be able to officially recommend it shortly after that.
This first phase of the project consists of 82 parameter variations that will go through 27 successive 2-week period simulations. This means at this time there are 82 workunits that will each be sent out 10 times. As each workunit completes and is validated, the output from the workunit will be fed into the next workunit which will simulate the next 2-week period for that particular parameter variation. This means that any given time there will only be 82 in-progress workunits. We set the deadline for these workunits to 5 days to keep the flow of workunits moving. There will be future phases in this project that will have much more work. At that time the 5.10 BOINC client should be broadly distributed. We are further working with BOINC to create a setting that would go into your device profiles (global preferences) that would allow you to specify the average amount of data downloaded that you want. It would be a decaying average so if you download a bunch of work on Tuesday, then it would make sure that you only download workunits that have small download sizes for the next couple of days until your average catches up to your target. |

I'm on 6 MEG Adsl line and it says I don't have bandwidth which is BS. The "A" part of that means asymmetric. What that means is that most of the speed is given to the download, and that the upload speed is a lot slower, i.e. not very fast. Whether it's enough to be acceptable, I don't know. The upload portion is likely 1 megabit or less.

Hi whocrazy,
According to knreed's earlier post, right now we are running 82 work units. That is, 82 parameter variations. Since 10 copies of each work unit are sent out, the first 820 computers to request ACH will empty out the server - - until more work units get dumped into the hopper. Lawrence |
