If I had to redownload boinc, how can I get it to stay with prior device? My profile states that I have 12 devices because it reassingns another device each time I download. Was wondering how I can download to the same computer , with new hardrive, without having a new device added to the profile. I want to use the existing device and its stats.

Hello downtowndan,
Every download creates a new device. The old devices disappear off your list after they have not returned a result for 2 weeks. This can be changed by using a drop-down menu in the Device Statistics page. There is a way to merge BOINC devices, but it does not work on our server because we started out with UD devices and added BOINC devices to the database. When BOINC first introduced the 'merge device' function it sometimes scrambled the statistics and/or slowed the server to a slow crawl, but eventually it got corrected. I do not know whether or not we shall ever implement this function. It is on the list, but so are many other things, and this function sounds scary, considering all the problems it caused in pure-BOINC databases when it was first implemented. Lawrence |

The keys are in some of the xml files. Done it it the past week multiple times without fail.

as said preserve the files and you've got the keys. Dabbling in those files is asking for trouble.

First, install fresh BOINC client, but don't input username and password after installation. Second, copy whole BOINC client directory from old system to new, overwriting all files. That's all, I did this several times without duplicating devices.
