Re: Computers tips

Have you ever needed a special character? -I’m talking about a special text character! Sure, there’s a bunch of Alt codes you can use to get results, but if you’re like me, you need a more visual approach.

So, in Windows 7 or Vista hit Start and type in Character Map in your search box. Now either hit Enter or double-click the Character Map icon that appears in the results.

From here, simply specify your font at the top and locate the special character you want to insert and double-click it. All of your selections will appear in the Characters to copy box, so all you have to do is hit the copy button when you’re done and then paste (CTRL+V) into your chosen program

Re: Computers tips

When I’m going to be away from my computer for a little while, I usually just put it to sleep rather than shut it down. This comes in pretty handy, but because my mouse is so sensitive, if I even so much as tap my desk the computer wakes right up again. This is because my mouse is set up to wake my computer if I move it.

So how to disable that in Windows 7.

Click Start, and in the Search Box type Mouse. Select the mouse icon that appears in the results above or just hit Enter.

After the Mouse Properties window appears, select the Hardware tab and click on Properties at the bottom.

Click the Power Management tab. If you don’t see it, then click the Change Settings button at the bottom of the Window.

Now simply deselect the option to Allow this device to wake the computer, click OK and you’re all set! Instead of using the mouse to wake your PC from sleep, just tap a key on your keyboard instead

Don’t like it this way? Just follow the steps again and re-select Allow this device to wake the computer

Re: Computers tips

If you’re a Windows 7 user, what do you do when it’s time to scan something? Do you open the program that came with your scanner, fiddle with a bunch of settings, preview the scan and finally commit to scanning the item in question?

Sounds like there should be an easier way, especially if all you need to do is scan something for your records. It doesn’t need to be perfect; just good enough.

So let’s scan the quick way!

1.) Put your document in your scanner

2.) Click Start>Devices and Printers
3.) Now locate your scanner, Right Click on it, and choose Start scan

You’ll get the scan with some quick and dirty options like Color format, Output type and Resolution. If you’re in a hurry, just hit the Scan button

After your scan is completed, you have a couple options. You can either hit Import in the resulting dialog box and Windows will put your scan into a special folder for imported stuff, or you can click Import Settings to manually choose a folder to save to.

After you hit Import the location your scan was saved to will pop up and you can double-click it for a preview!

But doesn't going in sleep mode stop Boinc from working sad

Formula for Megabyte to Gigabyte Conversion

As shown below, the formula is straightforward:

1024 Mb = 1 Gb

Therefore,
1 Mb = 1/1024 Gb = 0.0009765625 Gb

Let’s see how this works with two examples.

Example 1 – Convert Megabytes into Gigabytes

Suppose, you have bought yourself an Argus 3.2MP Digital/PC Camera. This camera comes with 16 Mb internal memory. How much is this in gigabytes? Let’s find out.

1 Mb = 0.0009765625 Gb

Therefore,
16 Mb = 0.0009765625 Gb x 16

16 Mb = 0.015625 Gb

There’s nothing more to it. Now, let’s look at another example.

Example 2 – Convert Gigabytes into Megabytes

Suppose you have bought yourself a new Black 4GB Strontium Flash Drive. As the name suggests, this flash drive has a 4Gb capacity. How much is this in megabytes? Let’s use the formula.

1 Gb = 1024 Mb

Therefore,
4 Gb = 1024 Mb x 4

4 Gb = 4096 Mb

That’s it!

Using Google to Convert Megabytes to Gigabytes

Doing these conversions can be a tedious task, especially if you need to convert odd sounding numerals, like 0.007833 Mb into gigabytes. Fortunately, Google comes with a in-built converter. All you have to do is specify the figures you want to convert in the Search field and then click the Search button, . The key here is to specify the conversion, so Google understands what you are trying to convert. For example, to convert 128 megabytes to gigabytes, type the following in the search field:

Convert 128 Mb to Gb

128 megabits = 0.125 gigabits

More about calculator.

Re: Computers tips

These days, it seems as though Facebook is the primary mode of communication for friends and family – I’ve put up photos and news about my activities; scheduled events for family functions – you name it, and I’ve probably posted it on Facebook at one time or another.
Here is how to download all of your Facebook information in just a few easy-to-follow steps.
First, log into your Facebook account. Once in, click the little arrow in the upper right-hand corner, then Account Settings.

On the next page, look towards the bottom and click Download a copy of your Facebook data.

The next page is where you’ll tell Facebook to archive all of your items. Go ahead and click on the Start My Archive button. You’ll get a warning that it may take a bit to gather all your info. When you’re ready, click Start My Archive a second time.
Now hang in there! You should receive an e-mail to the address associated with your Facebook account once your information zip file is ready. Follow the instructions to download all of your Facebook information in it. Pictures, events, friends; all of your walls posts – everything!

Re: Computers tips

browser tabs – who ever invented them deserves a big ol’ hug! And speaking of, did you know that If you use your middle mouse button to click on a link that it’ll open that link in a new tab? It works in just about every browser, so if you’re using Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer, you’re good to go!

It’s perfect for when you’re browsing around on a content-rich site (like Worldstart or Wikipedia, for example) and you want to keep all your searchings organized in separate tabs. It saves time, too.
Give it a try sometime!

Re: Computers tips

Hyper irritating when searching for help to non-Italian speaking members [pretty much everyone on these forums], when typing in a phras or line in google, you get results from Italian sites, so searched on a fix and found this:

http://thesamovar.wordpress.com/2007/09/24/ma...-other-language-you-like/

Works for me, and no longer are cookies needed to have it stick. Restarted and voila, primary searches [but always in English now crying )

(now to figure out how to make it search multiple languages in order, so for instance EN, IT, DE, FR etc.

(Why cant google be smart enough that if you type a question in Gaelic, the primary searches are to be performed on Gaelic web pages, when in another country?)

--//--

edit: Of course, they're not entirely dumb over at my best friend's [as a search engine only], so modded the proposed line to

<Param name=”hl” value=”en”,"it","fr","de","nl"/>

Sure enough, now typing a text in a chosen language pops out first responses in the right language. Way to go. dancing

Re: Computers tips

Have you ever been working on a complicated document and wished you could go back to a previous version? In Windows 7, you can: find the file in Windows Explorer; right-click it and choose Properties; click the Previous Versions tab. There may be some previous versions available. Click Copy to keep the current version or click Restore to overwrite it. Handy!
