why Boinc 5.8.15 ?

Hello,

why the install process pages detect that I have to download Boinc 5.8.15?

I use yet 5.8.16 since few month (to crunch for other projects), and thinking to update to 5.10.x soonly.

Re: why Boinc 5.8.15 ?

If 5.8.16 works for you, leave it alone. 5.8.x is quite stable.

WCG tests BOINC fairly thoroughly before recommending a higher version, but there can be higher alpha and beta BOINCs out there, or even the current Berkeley version (5.10.13).

5.10.x was recommended for a couple of days, but it was withdrawn. I actually am using 5.10.7 and have had no problems with WinXP, but others using different system configurations have reported a few problems.

I would not rush to get 5.10.x until it is recommended here. If you try a higher version, keep the old version around so you can reinstall if you want to go back.

Now that there is a higher probability that people joining WCG be already using Boinc it might be wise to make the link "Click Here if you have already downloaded the software" much more visible in that page.
For example bigger and higher in the page layout.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: why Boinc 5.8.15 ?

actually using 5.11.0 special advanced build :O

No one as yet has posted the 5.10.19 changelog on BOINC dev forum (as of last night, and it now being down completely)

Added: someone else posted just now to say 5.10.19 dysfunctional. From own experience anything after 5.8.16 has messed up local preferences setting and integrity, only working properly if you know what you're doing and or clear the local prefs and work off website prefs. https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=15903

It's a good chance v5.10.19 will refuse to run, but funnily enough it did run under win2k...

In any case, further alpha-testing v5.10.19 has been cancelled:
Go ahead and give up on this build. I'll be releasing a new one today.

Re: why Boinc 5.8.15 ?

I see them support messages appearing: I used to run UD+BOINC side by side and now my UD agent has suddenly disappeared.... that's what the changelog suggests is going to happen with this "BOINC 5.10.20 Unstable Development version"!

Re: why Boinc 5.8.15 ?

The way that the new installer will work is that when you launch the WCG-BOINC installer it will first give you the usual 'welcome to BOINC installer screen'. When you advance off of that screen the installer will check if the WCG version of the UD agent is installed. If it is then it will display a page where it asks if you wish to uninstall the UD agent (which will be the recommended action). If you say yes, then it will stop the UD agent (if it is running) and run the UD uninstaller. Following that it will take you to the screen to accept the BOINC license. If you say no, then it won't do anything and just advance you to the next screen to accept the BOINC license.

Also - we will include the options to install as a service with the new installer.
