Re: Interesting Medical News (Non-WCG Related Projects)

I found this story rather amazing..

Woman With 2 Uteruses Delivers Twins

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Authorities say a Florida woman with a rare medical condition has delivered twins -- one from each of her two uteruses.

The St. Petersburg Times reports Andreea Barbosa and her husband, Miguel, conceived the twins without reproductive medicine. Nathan and Natalie Barbosa were born Sept. 15 at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater.

The Barbosas named the twins Nathan and Natalie.

They join 2-year-old sister, Izabella.

The newspaper says Barbosa's obstetrician, Dr. Patricia St. John, placed the odds of such a pregnancy at 1 in about 5 million. The doctor explained that two eggs had to be released and fertilized at the same time in each uterus.

Barbosa's condition is called uterus didelphys. She says it was diagnosed four years ago. It's not the first recorded case. In 2010, a Utah woman with the same condition became pregnant with two babies, each conceived at a different time.

St. John says Barbosa's pregnancy was perfect and the twins were born via C-section at 36 weeks.

Signs of ageing halted in the lab

The onset of wrinkles, muscle wasting and cataracts has been delayed and even eliminated in mice, say researchers in the US.
It was done by "flushing out" retired cells that had stopped dividing. They accumulate naturally with age.
The scientists believe their findings could eventually "really have an impact" in the care of the elderly.
Experts said the results were "fascinating", but should be taken with a bit of caution.

Biochemical signature predicts progression to Alzheimer´s disease

New potential avenues for early disease detection
A study led by Research Professor Matej Oresic from VTT suggests that Alzheimer´s disease is preceded by a molecular signature indicative of hypoxia and up-regulated pentose phosphate pathway. This indicator can be analysed as a simple biochemical assay from a serum sample months or even years before the first symptoms of the disease occur. In a healthcare setting, the application of such an assay could therefore complement the neurocognitive assessment by the medical doctor and could be applied to identify the at-risk patients in need of further comprehensive follow-up...
