The Visual MD
----------------------------------------TheVisualMD site offers a rich, visual experience to learn, understand, and interact with health content on the Internet. TheVisualMD is brought to you by Anatomical Travelogue, LLC. Anatomical Travelogue, LLC is a medical imaging research and media production company based in New York City. Our unique 3D visuals are the foundation and signature of all Anatomical Travelogue products, including books, websites, TV shows, and museum exhibits. We use the visuals to tell stories and educate the public on topics and issues related to health and wellness. Our visuals are produced using real human data from a variety of medical scans – magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computer tomography (CT) ultrasound, and confocal laser scans. The data is collected, digitized, and recompiled using volume-visualization software. These volumes and virtual models are dissected, repositioned, colorized, and texturized as necessary to bring them to life. This website contains advice and information relating to health care. It is not intended to replace medical advice and should be used to supplement rather than replace regular care by your doctor. It is recommended that you seek your physician’s advice before embarking on any medical program or treatment. Search Visualization Bar for more..... |

Herpes:
----------------------------------------Antigenics has completed Phase 1 clinical testing of AG-707, a recombinant human heat shock protein-70 complexed with 32 distinct 35-mer synthetic peptides from the HSV-2 proteome. This broad spectrum of herpes antigens is intended to allow for more accurate immune targeting and surveillance, reducing the likelihood of immune escape. Further, the diversity of antigens in AG-707 increases the chance of providing protection for a wide segment of the patient population. "We could potentially create therapeutic vaccines for many infectious diseases. Our next step is to engage a partner to advance the clinical development of AG-707 in genital herpes and to pursue the broader application of the platform technology,” added Garo Armen, PhD, Antigenics chairman and CEO. http://www.streetinsider.com/FDA/Antigenics+%...tment+AG-707/5836461.html [Edit 4 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 28, 2010 3:54:37 AM] |

New 'superbug' found in UK hospitals
A new superbug that is resistant to even the most powerful antibiotics has entered UK hospitals, experts warn. They say bacteria that make an enzyme called NDM-1 have travelled back with NHS patients who went abroad to countries like India and Pakistan for treatments such as cosmetic surgery. Although there have only been about 50 cases identified in the UK so far, scientists fear it will go global. Tight surveillance and new drugs are needed says Lancet Infectious Diseases........... |

Bacterial Bonanza: Microbes Keep Us Alive Listen to the Story
There are trillions upon trillions of microbes living on and in the human body. To put this in perspective, Jeffrey Gordon, a professor at the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, who studies the microbes that live on and in us, offers this factoid: "We think that there are 10 times more microbial cells on and in our bodies than there are human cells. That means that we're 90 percent microbial and 10 percent human. There's also an estimated 100 times more microbial genes than the genes in our human genome. So we're really a compendium [and] an amalgamation of human and microbial parts.".. |

Aggressive Alzheimer's Disease Gene Discovered, May Help Find Treatments
Scientists may be able to uncover the speed that Alzheimer’s disease progresses using a genetic test, researchers say. Patients with a gene variation linked to higher levels of a protein associated with the disease get sicker two to seven times as fast as others, according to a study published today in PLoS Genetics.... |
