BOINC at Kurumin Linux!

Hi. I'm trying runnig BOINC in a Linux version called Kurumin (a Brazilian dritribution). I had followed the instructions, but i can never crunch beacause I always get the message:

"BOINC Manager is not currently connected to a BOINC client.
Please use the 'Advanced\Select Computer...' menu option to connect up to a BOINC client.
To connect up to your local computer please use 'localhost' as the host name."
I'm still a noob in the LInux World, so anyone could give me some clue of how solving this problem? Best Wishes,

Filipe Borges

Re: BOINC at Kurumin Linux!

You should probably start the core client before you start the manager.

./run_client

Re: BOINC at Kurumin Linux!

Thanks man! I've just done it, and it worked fine! But then, I've got the following messages:

Qui 09 Ago 2007 15:05:11 BRT|World Community Grid|Message from server: No work could be sent.
Qui 09 Ago 2007 15:05:11 BRT|World Community Grid|Message from server: Your computer has 185.61MB of memory, and a job requires 190.73MB

What can I do to crunch some WUs with such an old machine? I was used to crunch only the Genome Comparison WUs, and now...

Re: BOINC at Kurumin Linux!

If there is some way to get a LOT more virtual memory (i.e. swap or disk), that has been done successfully to run these projects on very small machines like yours.

There are some other linux threads here that may have some ideas, or Didactylos may wander in with some linux commands.

Yes, GC had a very small footprint and fast running workunits. There are some other projects in the queue, but we don't know their requirements yet. At least a couple will probably be more large ones.

Re: BOINC at Kurumin Linux!

Someone posted yesterday how s/he had reduced the BIOS setting for video RAM from i think 64mb to 32mb and further down to 16mb, which was enough to get her/him past the minimum RAM threshold. The open question was graphics. HPF2 on Linux has none AFAIK, but FA@H update coming out tomorrow i think will have, so be careful with that graphics display button.

Re: BOINC at Kurumin Linux!

I think we will see this problem frequently from now on. Anyone installing 5.10 will be limiting the amount of memory they use, and the preferences may not be displayed correctly.

Filipe Borges, please go to your device profile: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/v...iguration.do?name=Default

Set it to Custom Profile, and check that Use no more than: X% of total memory is set to 100%. Then, whether you changed it or not, save the setting. This is important! It is a new setting, and only by saving the profile will you make it work.

Finally, you can update BOINC to get the new preferences immediately. Your messages should include something like this:
09/08/2007 09:39:30||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 1023.48MB
09/08/2007 09:39:30||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 1023.48MB

Of course - if you don't use BOINC 5.10, this doesn't apply.

Re: BOINC at Kurumin Linux!

Hi guys! I've got another problem... =/

I bought a new computer and, while instaling BOINC in it, I always get the following messages:

[http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/] URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID: not assigned yet; location: (none); project prefs: default
2008-03-11 14:52:19 [---] No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults
2008-03-11 14:52:19 [---] Preferences limit memory usage when active to 250.93MB
2008-03-11 14:52:19 [---] Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 451.67MB
2008-03-11 14:52:19 [---] Preferences limit disk usage to 9.05GB
2008-03-11 14:52:48 [---] [error] GUI RPC bind failed: 98
gstate.init() failed: -180

Any clues of what going on?

Cheers!!!

Re: BOINC at Kurumin Linux!

Hi Filipe,

Not a clue, searched the forums finding 3 more posts with that binding error and am still clueless. Maybe you can make sense of it. One possible is the switch-off of the Remote Procedure Call function or a firewall blocking them. The person asking for help never responded again, so it's an inconclusive.

Re: BOINC at Kurumin Linux!

Hi Sek! I also didn´t have a clue, but when I restarted my computer today BOINC worked nicely, so let´s hope it keeps that way from now on ^^.

Cheers!!!
