Not getting enough work units

I have noticed the past few days that I get enough work units for about a day and a half but my settings is set for 3 days. I have a mac pro running boinc 5.4.9. Anyone else seeing this?

Re: Not getting enough work units

I've just been noticing this too on all my Windows rigs (running 5.4.9. or 5.8.16) - it seems to have started since the new shorter deadline FAAH units have been coming through - I'm wondering if this is having an effect on the Boinc earliest-deadline-first scheduling due to the constant pre-emptying of the longer older units confused

thinking Edit: Ah....just remembered that starting this Sat/Sun they are sending out the last old FAAH units with just 2 day deadlines - in which case if you already have enough work cached so its unlikely you could complete these latest units within the 2 day deadline then Boinc won't download any more until you can wink

Adywebb is correct about the new deadline for FightAIDS@Home (FAAH) work units which was discussed here. Check to see if this is the only project you are running at My Projects. If so, you might wish to check the box "Participate in All Projects" to build that work queue back up.

Dave, I believe you're correct with respect to 5.4.x BOINC since he's not getting new FAAH work sent by the servers - they don't believe he can complete it in time. Adding HPF2 should get him more work. I'm still on 5.4.11 and have crunched all the FAAH WUs in my queue (the last three had the short 3-4 day deadlines) and am only getting HPF2 now.

With 5.8.x and it's screwy scheduling algorithm, I think you'll end up not getting any new work because BOINC won't ask for it so adding a new project probably won't help there. As I recall, once BOINC 5.8.x thinks you're at risk of missing a deadline, it quits asking for new work until you're crunching on your last WU.

Re: Not getting enough work units

...yup, I can confirm that it gets to the last one nearly complete before asking for another....

Yep, and that's why there is a feature in 5.10 that WCG wanted before the final final 5.8 release .... it's called "additional buffer". If only 5.10.17 will proof robust enough in longer field exposure for it to be 'recommendable' for an earnest roll out.

As it is, the short deadline FA@H's even caused the longer deadline FA@H's to be delayed. If one day, if ever, BOINC client and server are able to link science application version info to the work units, none of the manipulations WCG and othe DC's are going thru will be required. Who knows will it show in a form on 6.0 raised eyebrow

I have selected all projects so not sure whats up. Don't want to upgrade boinc as this one seems very stable.

Re: Not getting enough work units

You have all projects selected and aren't getting new work on BOINC 5.4.x? Have you checked your Results Status to see if you're returning error results? I believe if you return enough of them, the WCG servers will quit or limit what they will send you until you start returning valid results.

Re: Not getting enough work units

Zero errors, zero invalids. All WU's given credit for. Getting alot of short completion time WU's though. Was starting to wonder if there is a shortage of WU's with so many computers crunching but hopefully doubtful. My mac pro would have a fit if it didn't have something to crunch (I think its addicted). laughing

As long as the wu's has only 2 days till deadline, there's no point to download 3 days of work since you've got no chance of finishing a 3-days cache in only 2 days... Therefore, the servers stops giving you more work then you've already got close to 2 days cached.

Then all the short-deadline wu is done and WCG switches-back to "normal" deadlines, you can again download 3 days of wu's.
