Hi. I was wondering if it's possible as a network-administrator on a school network to arrange for BOINC (or any other client) to run on computers that are not in use. The school I work on has about 100 computers that are turned on but logged out when not in use by a student. We use the standard Windows XP log in interface and I'm simply wondering if it would be possible to have a WCG-client running in the background if not logged in?

Yes. You need to use the version of BOINC available from Berkeley: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
Install it as a service, and it will run while nobody is logged in. Actually, it will run all the time, but you can configure BOINC to suspend while the computer is in use. BOINC can be deployed automatically. There is detailed information here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/WinDeploy Please ask if you need further help. |

Hopefully this doesn't need to be said but make sure that the school administrators are fully aware of what this is and that they sign off on it. There have been people fired over things like this.
I don't know what the typical school electric bill is but you might phase this in to see what effect it has on electrical costs. |

Thanks Didactylos.
We'll definitely check this out and see if we can make it work. I'll might be back in a couple of weeks to ask for more advice, but it seems pretty straight forward. finch: Thanks for the tip, but I think me and my co-administrators have it under control. It might be a good idea to phase it in, though, for several reasons. But according to the FAQ the cost should be more than $6 per year and computer and that should go well within the budget. But thanks again for caring! |
