I'll put in a request for this one.
----------------------------------------Getting to the end of a long chain can be tedious. Even if it is set to 50 messages per page, it can take nearly 15 minutes on dial-up. phpBB has an option for last or first display of the chain. How about this MVNforum? I was looking at one that was over 1770 messages. It was 36 pages. To add insult to injury, it doesn't skip the obvious 10 pages at a time. It's their call when they want to lock the thread and start another. Go into thread Page 1 - download 50 messages Enter page 10 - download 50 messages You can only see 4 pages farther, because it assumes you may want to go forward or backward by several pages. Enter page 14 - download 50 messages Enter page 18 - download 50 messages Enter page 22 - download 50 messages Enter page 26 - download 50 messages Enter page 30 - download 50 messages Enter page 34 - download 50 messages Enter page 36 - download 20+ messages There. I had to look at over 420 messages to get to the end. I don't remember what I wanted to say. If you want, change to 10 messages per page. It's 178 pages. Here's how it would go. I didn't have enough time to actually try it. Page 1 - 10 messages Page 10 - 10 messages Page 14 - 10 messages Page 18 - 10 messages Page 22 - 10 messages Page 26 - 10 messages Page 30 - 10 messages Page 34 - 10 messages Page 38 - 10 messages Page 42 - 10 messages Page 46 - 10 messages Page 50 - 10 messages Page 54 - 10 messages Page 58 - 10 messages Page 62 - 10 messages Page 66 - 10 messages Page 70 - 10 messages Page 74 - 10 messages Page 78 - 10 messages Page 82 - 10 messages Page 86 - 10 messages Page 90 - 10 messages Page 94 - 10 messages Page 98 - 10 messages Page 102 - 10 messages Page 106 - 10 messages Page 110 - 10 messages Page 114 - 10 messages Page 118 - 10 messages Page 122 - 10 messages Page 126 - 10 messages Page 130 - 10 messages Page 134 - 10 messages Page 138 - 10 messages Page 142 - 10 messages Page 146 - 10 messages Page 150 - 10 messages Page 154 - 10 messages Page 158 - 10 messages Page 162 - 10 messages Page 166 - 10 messages Page 170 - 10 messages Page 174 - 10 messages Page 178 - up to 10 messages

@retsof and esoteric17
----------------------------------------There is still a particular case which might force you to run the painful scenario described by retsof. It is when the last page does not contain all the new messages since your last visit. Then you need to scroll back one page. Fine you say, this I know. ![]() When you use the last page link you actually get the last page but the software says you are on page 1 (already reported bug). ![]() ![]() By the way do not say "except if there are 2 pages only". Because then the 1 is not clickable, of course. ![]() Cheers. Jean. |

Yes, it's a horrible bug (one that doesn't exist if you use the last post link in the *thread* index, not the recent threads page - weird)
- but there's a workaround for this at least - just put the offset in manually. The real killer is if you try to use the search feature. There's no sensible way to find the actual page you're looking for. Roll on forum upgrade, I say..... |

Until I bookmark everything, or even if I want to (I can be on 4 different unnetworked computers), I can fake the link by adding &offset=9999 to the link to get the number of the last page and then click on that, I guess, most of the time, unless there's a bug, unless there's an invisibility problem, ...

The trick is covered in the new FAQ. Click on the highest page link available or in your example page 10. Go to the address bar, but first look at the post count in page header. Subtract say 10 of e.g. 450 shown. Erase the 10 in the address bar and type 440 and enter. You get the last 10 or so posts.

If a regular membername finds only invisible messages in the last page, it will be unclickable. He'd have to back off until a visible message were found in the page.
----------------------------------------I've got the general idea. ![]()

I would actually like to see <first> <prior> <next> <last> buttons, but that would probably require different forum software, which of course is not at the top of the list at the moment, since the task of getting the real work to our desk is more important.
----------------------------------------I have been using the offset parameter myself, but since my team created a new team thread, it shouldn't be needed for awhile. I suspect the ideal solution is for the thread creator to create a new thread when they start to exceed a reasonable number of pages. |
