Good plan, never hurts to have a backup! But as far as BOINC is concerned, you could use a copy of the program directory from any point in time to maintain your device ID from one installation to another. All of the work units contained in the backup would have to be cancelled anyways no matter how recent the backup was done(unless it was only a few hours) since they would likely have been crunched already.

Not quite - so long as you make the deadline, the work will be useful. Even if WCG send out additional copies some time before the deadline, you have a few days to play with, not a few hours (unless you have a really huge queue, of course).
I'm not going to generally recommend trying to maintain your device ID, but it's still a pretty nifty thing to do, for those people who don't mind going to the trouble. |
