...I've reinstalled the BOINC client after replacing the HDD and reinstalling Window$ and about 150 security updates. As I figured would happen, the BOINC servers for all my projects believe this is a brand new machine. I've been able to merge the duplicate hosts on all my other projects, but not this one. Is there a way that we can merge BOINC hosts (should be a simple database operation to copy and append data from the old host to the new host, then delete old host), or will I just have to live with it for now?

Every install creates a new device. That can't be helped. Thought is given to merge capability, but there's not a lot of benefit. The staff would rather bring up new projects in the limited time available. It's on their "to do" list, but we don't know when.
----------------------------------------Reinstalling and telling it you are the same member (if you haven't already done it that way) is all you can do for now. I have 4 active computers myself, but am showing 110 devices. Many tests and computers are long gone. Statistics will be merged into the same membername if this path is taken.

Reinstalling and telling it you are the same member (if you haven't already done it that way) is all you can do for now. Having a backup would seem like a better option. :) |

Having a backup would seem like a better option. :) Yes, I remove BOINC as a program[from control panel]. Copy the remaining folder[boinc] to a thumb drive. After OS repair/reinstall, copy folder back to programs. Reinstall your favorite BOINC client and it is the same as before.[I also have an archive of boinc for all 46 of my boxes that is on a disc] I have done this many times without a problem. I am sure there are other means of doing the same thing, this is my way and it works for me

The install directory has a device ID in it. If you have your old ID file, you can update the new install with the old ID.

Yes. Still, mike's method is more comprehensive, since you can keep all your work in progress, too. It's also a fairly safe method, since you move all the files as a unit.
BOINC 6.0 will make this even easier for those who need to do it. |

Didactylos, I'm in the process of converting a single cpu machine running win/2000 into a dual cpu SuSe Linux box. I have to reinstall the OS when I install the second cpu and did not see a reason to put win/2000 back on it.
----------------------------------------Will backing up and restoring the install directory allow me to preserve the current WU, or is the WU code different for the two OS? I was planning on just telling this machine to not accept any new work, and then do the update after it has finished, with the hope of preserving the device ID. Thanks |

Firstly, you're correct - work units can't be passed from one platform to another. The science applications are different, and also work units are allocated to a specific platform.
Secondly, you are probably making enough changes that BOINC would reject your current (old) ID and re-register itself as a new host anyway. With that in mind, I don't think you should bother. |

I am sure there are other means of doing the same thing, this is my way and it works for me The biggest problem is not that the OS became corrupted, it's that the HDD itself failed - the computer no longer recognized it as a hard drive. I've already reinstalled and reattached to all projects, but I am investing in an external HDD, to which I will make regular backups. |

No worries, TILAD-X. It doesn't matter what you do with BOINC, and it's not a big deal if a few work units slip between the cracks. I think our concern is for your own data. Look after it! ;-) Over at UF, one kind member nags us every solstice and equinox - one way of remembering. I don't have the resources for a continual, complete backup, so I just back up my essential data.
I'm fairly sure when I have that inevitable crash, I will discover that maybe some things were more "essential" than I thought.... *eep.* |
