As I understand it, there is already a "ticket" open for this first request. But I'll add it again here.
I would like audible notification of checkpoints and when a work unit is finished. Secondly, I would also like the convenience of... "After next save" > • reboot • logoff • shutdown • send/receive • stop the client |

This is more challenging with BOINC, because several processes may be running simultaneously. To make this work effectively would be more work than it appears at first glance.
It's a good idea, though - like all good ideas, it has been mentioned before. I think the "shutdown" feature would make the checkpoint beeping unnecessary. |

I would like for the BOINC's tooltip to fade away after moving the cursor. You know, like the clock does. I dislike having to close out the tooltip every time I just want to do a quick check of how far along it is progressing. Hi, debsgr8. Just for you: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/changeset/14214 |

The tooltip fix on Vista HP was so effective (if it was fixed in 5.10.30), that now the only thing showing is "BOINC Manager" and no more progress percentages.

Not very applicable here because the techs keep a tight ship and everything running smoothly
---------------------------------------- but perhaps an option in BOINC to get new tasks from backup selected project(s) if the agent cannot connect to the primary project's servers for X time? (e.g. say I can't hit WCG servers for 4 hours - so then get work from Rosetta@Home, and disallow new work after communication/downloading work with WCG is re-established) Yes this can be done at the agent level by just having another project attached and then clicking "allow new work" - but that's a lot of work when you have many many machines. Would be cool if it did it automatically. Just a low-priority suggestion. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 28, 2007 6:38:48 PM] |

Hi eso,
----------------------------------------Wish we had the exclusivity on that option when Seti goes off the air :D The play you can do is the project weight aka resource share. Give any backup project a few points and it will fill in if WCG truly remains unreachable. You can set Rosetta jobs to process at 2, 4, 6, 8 hours for a single job so you can tune that to the connect frequency.... a little experimenting is required to find the balance. Inserted: The weight play is that the maximum for any project is 1000, so setting the backup to e.g. 1 or 2 would near never fetch work from the B.u.p. and if it does, quickly puts it in Long term Debt. cheers Note to self (Slip Dr. D.P.A some special code to make WCG always the backup project if not prime .... LoL)

Sekerob, the tooltip change was for BOINC 6, and was committed to trunk. It doesn't count as a bugfix, since the original behaviour was by design.
But Rom's been fiddling around with that code too, and I haven't tested it in 5.10.30. |

Surprise Surprise, but something else checking today on the 5.10.30 on Vista install was the tooltip in both Autohide Start bar and Always on Top. In both cases a full tooltip showed with the 4 processes and % progress. If faded out after a 4-5 seconds. Mind you this is the WCG skinned version (dont know if anything else exists for 5.10.30).

7 seconds. Vista always shows balloons for 7 seconds.

I'm digging this up because I'm hoping there is something new in the past 2 years...

I think the "shutdown" feature would make the checkpoint beeping unnecessary. ~~~ ... because several processes may be running simultaneously. That begs the question: How do members using dual/quad cores decide when to reboot now? I mean, which checkpoint do they use now if they have more-or-less the same long-checkpoint projects? What's their thought processes? What's their criteria? I think the "shutdown" feature would make the checkpoint beeping unnecessary. One doesn't need the beeping for the shutdown, one wants the beeping for the decision making process, depending on the circumstances. For example, one of the uses of an audible checkpoint notification is... "Okay, it just did a checkpoint. The storm is due to arrive in about an hour. Is there time for another checkpoint or should I go ahead and shutdown now?" And for example, one of the uses of an audible shutdown notification is... "Okay, it's shutting down. Now I can get the canned air, Q-tips, and vacuum out and give this baby a cleaning." For both of the above scenarios, I don't have to be in the same room with the computer. I can be in the kitchen, family room, laundry, etc. Heavens, I could even set up a baby monitor and go outside. So, have any of you techie-types written anything for BOINC? I can't remember how Roman did it with UD-Monitor, but some of us paid him for his shareware program. At $5 a pop, somebody might be able to make enough money to take a date to the movies and order the HUMONGOUS popcorn, EXTRA LARGE soft drink and maybe, just maybe, have enough left over for some Raisinets. <wink> |
