Is one 'better' than the other. Why? And if you said Boinc,
which is the most reliable version? Thanks a Bunch! ![]() |

Gormzilla, a few recent threads exist discussing the pro's / con's and posted a comparative table... still a few items to add, but here the latest draft (will self-update). Upcoming Dengue phase I wont run on UD if that's an argument.

I'll iterate part of Gormzilla's question... which BOINC version is most reliable?

Always use the stable release. Older releases aren't actively maintained, and while they may be reliable, nobody can guarantee anything about them.
World Community Grid change their official version to the latest release from Berkeley after the final version has had a couple of months of testing in normal use. Don't touch the alpha releases if you want an easy life! They are not stable. Sometimes they don't run at all. In summary, use 5.8.16 (5.8.17 for Mac users). |

I run 5.8.15 of boinc ... with my own modification so that it lies about RAM size to the server so I can get WUs. Wouldn't it be easier to change the number of days between connecting to the network setting? Mine is set to 2.5.Memory as low as 168Mb will work as long as there is a lot of virtual memory available.

Here was the statement:
----------------------------------------I run 5.8.15 of boinc ... with my own modification so that it lies about RAM size to the server so I can get WUs. The default queue is 0.1. After the memory issue is fixed, they are going to want to run more than 2.4 hours worth of workunits. "Jeopardy" answser in the form of a question. Instead of faking out the BOINC memory tester to get more workunits, wouldn't it be easier to make the queue larger to get more workunits? There ARE a couple of different issues here. Another in another thread successfully runs a 128Mb machine by adding 1Gb of virtual memory. After getting workunits, there's getting more workunits.

You have the wrong end of the stick.... he's faking the available memory so that he gets work units AT ALL.
Not an advisable thing to do unless you don't mind a lot of swapping and you don't want to use the machine for anything else. I haven't extensively tested the memory enforcement myself, so I can't honestly be very definite about the need for this. |
