boinc 5.10.7 question

Hello.
Every time I open the boinc client to check on the WCG project it runs, the message box thing on the simple view is always blinking red. When I click it I see this kind of stuff. Is it normal. Should I just ignore it. It seems to be cranking out the results so I dont know if this is a bad thing. Thanks

Re: boinc 5.10.7 question

That just means that there is a new message, but I don't see any way to prioritize them. There is some behind-the-scenes discussion about numbering BOINC messages in the future, so perhaps critical messages could be split out. Your messages all looked normal.

I spend my time in the advanced view monitoring a lot of workunits, so it doesn't blink at me.

Re: boinc 5.10.7 question

Don't know what messages make it blink.... maybe e.g. at file downloads/uploads ????? At any rate if 5.10.7 works, you're fine, but it is known to crash the desktop (explorer) and was retracted as recommended version by Berkeley AND was never recommended by WCG. Wait for the green light on these boards!

Re: boinc 5.10.7 question

I have been using 5.10.7 on both WinXP and Win98 with no problems. Vista users may have different experiences.

5.10.7 is working fine for me under Xp on both desktop and laptop. The sheduling seems to work a little better, and I like the status bargraphs in the task view.

There was me thinking WCG was just lazy in reporting new BOINC versions devilish But perhaps these Berkely people are a bit rash in releasing new versions and we should trust good old WCG in future wink

Re: boinc 5.10.7 question

Except for the MAC version Berkeley retracted ALL 5.10.7 versions and as reported, I had a desktop crash too as early as 5.10.5 and it remains elusive but in significant numbers. It does kill BOINC science and happens un-attended for no pin-pointable reason i read off and was reported INCLUDING vista.... some test releases are now up to 5.10.10 and D. may confirm if it's impacting the 5.11 development that was kicked off a few weeks ago.

Re: boinc 5.10.7 question

Hintsala, are you running BOINC as a service?

If you do, there is an issue where BOINC Manager reads all the BOINC messages (since the core client started) and will blink an alert if it finds any error (usually just a temporary condition). So, not only is the error probably something that happened days ago, it is the same error every time you open the Manager.

Even if you are not running as a service, you may see this issue if you switch between simple and advanced views a lot.

This bug has existed since 5.8.

Re: boinc 5.10.7 question

No i dont think I am running it as a service. I just installed it to my startup folder and let it do its thing. It even registered for me which was cool. It just started right away with my acct info in it. I guess I do switch btwn the simple and advanced views a bit because I was trying to figure out what was going on. I will just ignore it from now on.
Oh yea. I have another weird thing for you guys. When I left for work today after posting my original question, boinc was still running. Now I just got back from work and it was off. Strange because no one touched my comp and it has been running 24/7 for a few days with no other problems than the message thing. Any clue or should I just chuck the experience in the "forget" pile.

Re: boinc 5.10.7 question

Hintsala, this is the bug that caused Berkeley to withdraw the 5.10 release, because it is unstable.

The safe thing to do is to downgrade to 5.8 until it is solved.

Re: boinc 5.10.7 question

How do I switch them out. I am downloading the 5.8 now but it will take a while as I am on dialup. no cable in the boonies where i live. Then what? Thanks for all your help. I can't believe how crappy the switch has turned out to be. WCG agent was very stable but the points stunk.
