Re: I'm having a spot o' trouble here

smile Hi Larry
It would appear that a number of members including myself are experiencing long run times on current work units
My current one took 1hr 52 minutes to get to 1% and is currently at 12.9% which as taken 18 Hrs 31 Mins
At this rate it will take 143 Hours [Almost 6 days]
No matter, as your completed Work Unit will arive at the sever eventually and you points will be awarded
It will just take longer to see the benefit
I personally love large work units as I like to see a large number of points being contributed to my team in one big lump
Different strokes for different folks, I guess[Grin]
A number of members have run into what they percieved to be a problem with the progress, appearing to have stopped
On most of these Work Units this is not the case
Usually you have reached a part of the work unit that has a really complex fold and consequently take longer
A member here recently had a work unit that appeared to have stopped at 93% and it took 5 hours to get past this complex part of the work unit, however he did complete it and returned it to the server and was awarded his points
Killing the process and starting again is not always the best course of action
The point I am trying to make is Please Have Patience

Regards

Re: I'm having a spot o' trouble here

Larry,

At the moment the WCG-server seems to distribute some rather "tricky" Wu's now cool on three of my four devices Wu's from 100+ hours are loaded now. . not talking
I will certainly drop some places in the comming days crying crying but than .... I will rise again laughing laughing
So just be patient everything will happen as it should.

Keep the CPU's smoking..

Re: I'm having a spot o' trouble here

Thank you for the responses. I was not planning on killing the process because I was seeing regular progress and the graphs and graphics were functioning normally. I am willing to see it through. I mainly was wondering if this situation was just exclusive to me or was the same problem the person who started this message thread was experiencing. I am also wondering if with a P4 3.2 ghz processor it takes over 100 hours of processing to complete a WU how long will it take someone with a P2 or P3 to finish? Perhaps it will be like falling into the Black Hole of Calcutta, never to be heard from or seen again (that is, returning WU's before next Summer begins devilish )

Re: I'm having a spot o' trouble here

Thank you all for your sage and helpul advice, but my friend appears to have solved the problem with uninstall/reinstall and re-registration. It was not so much the size of the WU that troubled him, more the fact of his PC locking up solid after a while. The latest download is running at 18.3% after 2 hours 17 minutes, further and faster than ever before. So, let us trust that the matter is resolved.

To the member suffering computational constipation, I would advise 'more' fibre, not less. Failing which, try Ex-Lax.

devilish

Warlock;
Right concept, wrong prescription. Then it could depend on if you are hibernating or not. Black bears and grizzles consume huge amounts of grass as fiber to form a butt plug before going into hibernation, giving entirely new meaning to blowing it out your arse, when you first wake up. tongue

Re: I'm having a spot o' trouble here

Workunits vary greatly in the amount of time they can take. Some take just a few hours, some can take days. Some are also what we call non-convergant. They'll work for a long time, apparently make very little or no progress and then suddenly return. This is perfectly normal.

A question. Did the program truely freeze up? How did you determine this? The best way to check this is to look at the graphics. If the graphs are drawing, the program is running as the graph data comes in real-time from the Rosetta program. Remember, for some very difficult workunits, it might take hours for the progress to bump up just a little.

In the end, points are the true measure of contribution, not results. This might be confusing to some experienced grid folks, especially SETI folks where results are the measure of contribution.

Re: I'm having a spot o' trouble here

Ok, thank you for the information. In my case progress is being made just at a very slow pace. I do not mind going at a slow rate. I am just happy to take part in this project. I joined the grid just a couple of days after it was released for public use and my present WU is the most difficult yet. Initially I had many aborted WU's but in the last few weeks things seem to be quite stable so I knew from the start of the present WU that the software is good and just the WU is difficult.

Maybe it was my fault for not explaining things clearly. But it wasn't only the program that froze, it was my entire PC. I could do nothing with it at all, and the only way to close it down was to pull the plug. Since reinstalling the agent software, I've had no more trouble. The WUs still run very slow, but now I know why that is. I guess the agent just got it's knickers in a twist on the first installation.

Thanks a lot for all the advice guys.
