Low memory problem causing restart

Twice now, I've had work units restart at over 50% because Norton reports I'm running low on system memory. This last time, it was when I tried to start Diablo II for the first time after installing this. It's not that big a deal, but it is frustrating. Anybody know anything about this, or how to avoid it? Is it safe to exit the program before starting the game, or will this force a new download when it starts up again?

Re: Low memory problem causing restart

smile Hi Joe
Lets look at your first question
I might be a good idea to view the size of your swap file
This can be found by clicking on: Start then Control Panel then System then click on Advanced then Peformance Settings then Advanced again
Look at Virtual Memory and see what is recomended
It should be 1.5 times your installed ram
But I would set it at 1000 Meg if it is set at less
This may help to stop Norton reporting Low Memory Usage
I had the same problem with Norton Internet 2004
If you log into Norton as Administerator and click on Norton Internet Status Settings
Then double click on Personal firewall and go to Advanced Settings, then click on General and scroll down the Discription List and find hundreds of descriptions in this list, then that is what is causing your low memory message
You may have to Uninstall Norton and Re Install it to remove all the extraneous entries

The answer to your second question
Right click on the WCG Grid Agent in the System Tray and click on Exit
When you want to restart it, go to Start then Programs then Startup and double click on WorldCommunityGrid
You will only lose work completed after your last save point in the file

I hope this helps to rectify your problem

Regards

Re: Low memory problem causing restart

Currently, I have 256Meg RAM and a 300 MB swap file. I don't have endless disk space to allocate, and I can't run defrag because something is constantly accessing the disk and I can't locate it. (This comes from before installing folding@home, so it's not the culpret.) I've even used a program that shows me what's accessing the disk and can't find it. Good to know I can exit at any time, as that may allow the game to run without mucking things up. BTW, I also don't have the Latest and Greatest in Norton and don't expect to. Having been unemployed ever since the call center I worked at was closed almost two years ago, upgrading $oftware is very low priority. Thanx for the suggestions, however.

Rosetta allocates a lot of memory, but only uses about 1/4 of it. This means most of it is permanently paged out to disk.

The first, you up bump up your virtual memory by at least another 256MB, more if you have the disk space. Here's how to do this on XP.
* Right click on "My Computer"
* Click the "Advanced" tab
* Click "Settings" in the Peformance section
* Click the "Advanced" tab
* In the Virtual Memory section, click the Change button.
* On the virtual memory dialog, you have a few options. These are up to you, but you want to bump up the Maximum size by at least 256MB, 512MB or more if you have the disk space. For performance reasons, the initial should be set to the same value as the Maximum, but that's up to you.
* OK everything and reboot.

In addition to doing the above, why not simply exit the Agent while playing games? That's what I do. The agent isn't really doing anything anyway since almost all of the CPU is being used by the game. You'll also free up the memory used by Rosetta which can help the performance of your game. When you're done playing, simply restart the Agent. Start->Programs->World Community Grid->World Community Grid Agent. It will start up where you left off (percentage wise).

BTW, Diablo II kicks butt smile

Re: Low memory problem causing restart

I'm a tech support rep with too many decades of computer experience. Because of this, I won't downgrade my computer by going to either Win2K or XP. Thanx for the suggestions anyway, and as long as it's safe to exit the program when playing games, that's what I'll do. Thanx for your assistance.
