Disk drive power management

I assume that I can use power management to power down the display but can I also power down the disk drive and leave the CPU running?

Re: Disk drive power management

smile Hi Paul
As you suggested, you can power down the display
As for the Hard drives, I am not so sure about that one
I believe that Rosetta.exe writes incrimental save points to the hard drive so that if you get a lock up and have to restart the computer, it will pick up the processing of a work unit from the last save point
As it needs to access the hard drive to write these save points, you may need to keep the hard drive accessable
So I would not recomend it, however i will investigate the plausability of powering down the hard drives and get back to you

Regards

Re: Disk drive power management

Paul,

Depending on what You allow the client's HD size and you memorry installed it might work but, as Graham already stated, you have to test it on your machine for some time to be sure.
You might use some memmory sticks to overcome the lack of HD-space available but that's depending on you configuration and OS.

Keep us posted about your testing results.

cool Disk drive power management

Hi everyone
My Work Stations HD makes a sight noise as it spins up.
So I set it 3min shut down. Didn't hear anything for 20 min.
Then I got Distracted. drooling The next work unit was a Bear. I started
hearing the little whine it makes more often. ( and hits to my IIS)
So it seems (Powering down) it can be done on slow work units.
I reset mine to never, as I prefer not wear out my HDs.
Somewhat like a car in that repeated start ups shorten the life of the
HD by a small amount.
If your worried about Data this is big.
If it's saving money on power from your hd you want then it may work
out a tiny bit Cheaper.

I need a Watts Up!!!

Re: Disk drive power management

Second this idea for what it is worth. I'm not much worried about the motherboard or the CPU but the should be a way to reduce the wear and tear on my harddrives. I would not mind allowing my computers to run 24/7 if the hard drives were not taking such a beating. This is the same problem SETI and all other Distributed clients seem to have. Windows provides the capabilty to durn off the hard drives after so many minutes but the client never lets it get to the point of turning off.

Windows itself is also a very bad culprit. If you have enough memory, you should be able to point your temporary files etc to a RAM disk for better performance (and the inherent risks). However, Windows will still try to access the physical drive.

One way that could help is to configure your swap file to be on a completely different hard disk.

Re: Disk drive power management

confused
I don't know why but I am currently working under the impression that XP does not make creating a RAM drive easy. Too bad the thumbdrives aren't bigger (cheaper) Kangaroo makes a 4GB drive but is more than I what to plop down right now. I would go with one of those as an alternative.
