Strange Files

I have recently discovered more than 100 "empty" files in a temp folder in My Documents. The all have a four digit numerical name and appear to be 0 bytes. Are these anything to do with the WCG ? Also I am constantly asked by my McAfee Firewall to grant Internet access to various programs with 4 digit numerical named .exe files in the same Temp location. Again I ask, is this how WCG gets the info from my pc.

Re: Strange Files

smile Hi John Conrad

These are not files created by Rosetta.exe, your grid agent
If you are running Win XP, try running Disk Cleanup
It is in Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/
If they are not being used. Disk Cleanup will remove them
If they are still there after you run Disk Cleanup you need to find out what program is creating them
Right Click on the Task Bar at the bottom of the screen and open Task Manager and see what programs are running in the Application Window
Close them down one at a time and run Disk Cleanup again each time you close a program down
Keep checking the temp directory and hopefully you will be able to isolate the program that is creating them

This may be a malware or a spyware program so if you have a spyware Scanner try running that also and check again
If you need the name and location of some good free ones please get back to me
If this does not work please get back to me and we will try something else, Ok

Regards

Re: Strange Files

Hi Graham,
thank you for your interest in my "problem".
I will follow your advice and try to track down the program that is creating these files. I will post back when I have more info.
Thanks again.

That is your default Windows temp space. Any program on your system that needs temp space uses that directory. Many programs don't clean up properly and leave garbage behind (InstallShield is notorious for this). This is, unfortunately, very common. Normally you can safely delete any files in there, but you should check the dates and you may not want to delete any files created since your last reboot, just to be safe.

Rosetta, the application that's running, does not use any temp space, so it's not our app. The Agent also doesn't use any temp space.
