Upgraded to BOINC 5.10.7

I just upgraded to BOINC 5.10.7 and I am puzzled by one of the message lines:

My question is about
6/20/2007 1:22:50 PM||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 447.74MB
6/20/2007 1:22:50 PM||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 805.94MB

Since my device profile allows 100% usage, why is the usage when active so much less than when idle?

Has it always been like this?

Is it just the new 5.10.7?

Or is there some separate profile I should be searching for to change?

confused

Re: Upgraded to BOINC 5.10.7

I don't recall ever seeing that in 5.8.xx versions.
Maybe since BOINC is run at low priority version 5.10.xx has a feature to run with low RAM usage while the system is active? Just a shot in the dark.

Re: Upgraded to BOINC 5.10.7

It's a new profile setting.

There were cases not so long ago where BOINC users found that BOINC was using too much of the available memory, particularly when trying to do other memory intensive work. These preferences allow precise control over BOINC's memory usage. It's really rather a long-awaited feature (by some).

I'm not really sure how the WCG settings reflect these new options.

Bear in mind that your device is using your "home" profile. Try changing that profile to 100%.

Found this on the BOINC forums:
17/06/2007 14:05:08|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user
17/06/2007 14:05:08|SETI@home|(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks)

17/06/2007 14:05:13||Host location: home
17/06/2007 14:05:13||General prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults
17/06/2007 14:05:13||Reading preferences override file
17/06/2007 14:05:13||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 511.38MB

17/06/2007 14:05:13||Preferences limit disk usage to 9.31GB

It looks like a 5.10.xx thing...

Re: Upgraded to BOINC 5.10.7

Sorry didn't see Didactylos post. Is WCG recommending 5.10.xx yet? Or still on 5.8.xx?

Re: Upgraded to BOINC 5.10.7

Actually it has been a 5.8 thing except WCG always combined it in the profile as 1 setting and 100%. I used the override file to manage or used another project that did split busy and idle %. The default was AFAICR 60/90.

I may be part to blame as this was high profile and got a bit loud over the 1,084gb RAM use on some HDC jobs. It's a great thing, because if a jobs memory needs get too big, the job will go into a "waiting for memory" state and moves on to the next job.... until it encounters the same limit.

From a Vista perspective 5.10.7 is better cohabitating, but a WCG packaged upgrade will be a wee while away. Sit back if one or the other late bug surfaces, which WCG has traditionally been waiting for. The 6.0 development cycle officially started, so the odds may be low.

Re: Upgraded to BOINC 5.10.7

joneill003: BOINC has just recommended 5.10.7. It will take us a little while to put it on the WCG website.

Didactylos: I am at 100%. How can BOINC define 100% to be only half my memory?

Added: Another puzzle I just remembered. My profile still has the old 'cache 0.1 days of work units'. But I downloaded enough work units after I started to last for 0.3 days, even though nothing in my device profile changed. It is as though it is using some generic device profile.
