I'm heartened to hear that my suspicions were not far from the mark and that corrective action is in the wind.
The example I gave was theoretical - the principle would hold wherever the distribution was greater than the quorum, differing only in degree. But just when I thought it was safe to go back to toting barges and lifting bales, another little question arises - although it doesn't appear to be a BOINC problem, more a policy issue. GC indeed had a quorum-3, distribution-3 system. However, HPF2 has a quorum-15, distribution-19 policy. Having already dealt with the overage in distribution, why does HPF2 require a quorum of 15 where GC had 3? Even if we have to be very especially ultra-careful, does this huge differential yield that much better a result? It would appear to me to be an indulgence on a near-governmental scale. If the distribution=quorum was reduced to 5 for example, the crunching should be nearly 4 times faster. Or am I up a gum tree? (seems to be my normal location) |

Scroll back to my first reply..... "for all projects except HPF2 (which uses a different quorum method)."
Well done on spotting the massive quorum, but it is (fortunately) perfectly normal. ALL the work units are unique, and once a group of 15 of them are returned, they are analysed to decide how much credit to award. Invalid results can be spotted without comparing them byte by byte. WCG always look for ways to squeeze the most work out of the grid, and this is one of those ways (although it does look like the opposite if you just go by the quorum figure). |

The third post in the thread linked below has an elaboration on the HPF2 exception.
