Linux console output

Recently joined WCG (using Boinc). I'm running a 64-bit boinc Linux client on a 64-bit Ubuntu 7.04 system. I manually start the boinc client, from a console.

Noticed that when a Human Proteome Folding workunit started, my console shows a constant stream of output lines: [INFO] pct=0.xxx

I would like my console output to not be cluttered up with these project application messages. Is there something I ought to do to __not__ see all these Human Proteome Folding generated lines ?

Re: Linux console output

Have you tried redirecting stderr?

Have you tried to specify --daemon option?

Re: Linux console output

Thank you for your responses.

My point is that I am a user of 'Human Proteome Folding', not a developer. Thus I am __not__ helped by this (presumably meant for "debugging") information being written out by this application while crunching.

However, output to stderr by other projects (I run more than one) might help me when something does go wrong. What I am concerned about is that the "clutter" written by 'Human Proteome Folding' might "bury" some messages that I *do* want to see. [I would have the same concern, even if stderr were redirected to a file instead of appearing on the console.]

mikus

p.s. This is a multi-core system. When several 'Human Proteome Folding' tasks are being crunched simultaneously, their output lines are intermixed -- it might be hard to distinguish which task wrote which set of output lines.

Re: Linux console output

Normally, stderr is redirected (it is also sent back to the WCG servers). If the application is writing to stdout instead, than that's a bug that needs fixing. I'll try and have a look into it soon, but to be honest, this is going near the bottom of my todo list. I'll kick it over to the techs later.

Thanks for reporting this.

I'm used to other boinc projects, where I can look at my 'Results' records on the website and see what text was sent back to the servers. However, WCG seems to only show an "abstract" of each result (for instance, I've not been able to compare my processing time for that result against how long it took for other participants to crunch that same result).

Is detail about results available to WCG participants? If yes, how?

Re: Linux console output

? Presume you are familiar with the Result Status page: Here a description and what detail can be seen there, *Including* the processing timesof others in the quorum:

My question had incomplete information. Yes, on the Result Status page I can click in the 'Result Name' field, and see on the displayed Workunit Status page an "abstract" of the reports for that workunit that have been sent back to the server -- but I cannot click within the individual entries on the Workunit Status page to see the stderr content of *that* reported result, nor can I follow (as I can for other boinc projects) a link which gives a description of the computer that submitted *that* report.

Bottom line: Though the Workunit Status page shows the CPU times taken by the individual submitters, I have not been able (from the information that WCG shows) to compare the processing ability of my system to the abilities (given the same work) of other __identified__ systems.

Re: Linux console output

1. Seeing the stderr of other work units in quorum was I think on the ToDo list, implemented, then pulled in the same revision reversal of next point. Need to check if it is back on the ToDo list as a separate update.

2. Are you talking Computer spec or / and 'Who' / Which computer ID? I've seen at other pure BOINC projects that devices can be referenced to members! That info for other work units in a quorum was very briefly put up back in January and pulled. The hosts visible option is at WCG by default set to off. The individual can choose if that information is passed to the BOINCstats sites.

Re: Linux console output

I think there's a privacy issue here. I don't believe WCG will ever show quite so much information about other hosts as other BOINC projects.
