Dave, Keith.
----------------------------------------I've just returned to verion 5.4.11 because versions 5.8.15 & 5.8.16 were both causing all sorts of problems with uploads, and with downloading new work. Do either of you know if there are any udates for 5.4.11 that I should be aware of? |

Dave, Keith. I've just returned to verion 5.4.11 because versions 5.8.15 & 5.8.16 were both causing all sorts of problems with uploads, and with downloading new work. Do either of you know if there are any udates for 5.4.11 that I should be aware of? I don't know because I've been away so long. Perhaps Keith might know. The best place to ask would be in the BOINC Support forum. Sekerob is very up to date on BOINC ins and outs. |

Raptor - I also had problems after the outage today with those machines running 5.8.16 failing to re-start communications correctly, whilst those running 5.4.9 or 5.4.11 were all fine.
I have been running both those 5.4 versions without problem now for some time, so I wouldn't have any qualms about using it. |

Yes, BOINC was quite stable and quite predictable prior to the 5.8 levels. I had no hesitation upgrading to new releases. When 5.8.x came out and they redid the scheduling algorithm, it was about as understandable and predictable as a dead rat in the Antartic. I can understand their wanting to have BOINC "protect the user from their own stupidity/ignoranvce" as that would actually benefit the projects by reducing the number of WU's that didn't get crunched in time. Too often though, when software starts trying to predict what the user needs to do in spite of what the user is telling it, it tends to hit the fans in the wind tunnel.

Today we were passed by XtremeSystems in total run time. We also have a sizable drop in the number of members returning a result today. That is clearly due to the holiday tomorrow, folks being out on vacation and machines being turned off in the meantime. Not much that can be done about that except for getting thru the week as best we can and thanking those of you who continued to crunch today whether you are there with your machine or not.
