First off, thanks for sticking around for a few more days guys. Ady just missed hitting 1,000,000 points today on his main id. One million points in I believe NINE days is rather mind boggling. Pwrguru is just a day from half a million; VAIO GRX616 is about three, maybe four days from quarter of a million points; Orakk will hit 100,000 at about the same time; Charles will probably hit 50,000 tomorrow and Rick appears to be covering everyone's six.
---------------------------------------- Thanks too to TLD. Glad to have had you here. Come back anytime. All of you feel free to display our Hall of Fame banner. You can always add them to your collections. Needless to say, we have had some excellent days lately. If we can keep things up at the present levels, we will reach 25,000,000 for the year late this week. Being halfway to our goal for the year at the end of the first week in July would be REAL nice. I would like to get our number of members returning a result back up a bit. It seems to have dropped some lately. Everyone's work still matters. It all adds up and we reach our goals together as a team!D'abord au loin, merci pour coller autour pour quelques plus de types de jours. |

During the WCG server outage last night, I noticed that my systems ran out of work units pretty quickly. When the system came back up, I decided to do something about that. I found that one of my fellow CA's, Sekerob. has a pointer to the BOINC FAQ. Some serching there came up with a discussion of the setup of the global preferences override file here. The key parameter involved in having a work queue large enough ro span an outage of some type (WCG Server last night or ISP being down for an extended time and the like) is
<work_buf_min_days> Minimum work queue wanted. Default is 0.1 days. Maximum is 10 days. Usage, between 0.0001 and 10. I set mine to <work_buf_min_days>1.0</work_buf_min_days> This gives me enough work queued up for a full day of processing (I run my systems 24/7). A word of caution here -- don't go overboard on the setting. Setting it too high may cause you to return work units after their deadlines and, delays of 4 or 5 days will cause others to experience delays in having their results validated. One other point regarding the settings in the sample from the BOINC FAQ. The setting: <run_if_user_active>0</run_if_user_active> will cause BOINC to be suspended whenever you are working at your system. If you prefer to have BOINC just run in the background using free CPU cycles as I do, this should be set to the value "1": <run_if_user_active>1</run_if_user_active> A final comment: be sure to read the FAQ item closely, particularly the warning about shutting BOINC down while editing and about setting "All Types" as you save the edited file. I know that our illustrious Team Captain, KeithHenry, is quite knowledgeable about BOINC and hope he might add some comments about this. |

Well, my experience with BOINC is that generally 3 to 3.5 days is the longest you normally want to set any work buffers. Having been crunching with WCG since day 3, the longest outage (back around last Christmas) was long enough that my three day queue was just enough to last thru it. I was close to finishing my last WU when the servers came back. In that outage, WCG had hardware problems in the middle of a blizzard. Outages are rare and seldom more that several hours.
----------------------------------------The other reason not to go beyond 3-3.5 days is that was the point that beyond which you'd actually hurt yourself with the really strange scheduling algorithm used in the 5.8 levels of BOINC. I had so many problems caused by that change that I went back to 5.4.11 and am still there. I am waiting for 5.10 to go "gold" to check it out as they have supposed redone the scheduling algorithm again to make it more sensible and less paranoid. There can be unique circumstances where you may want to do a "one-time" load of say a week's worth of work but you'd be doing more active management of your queue to prevent returning work too late. I've seen a couple of cases where someone was going on vacation and not have any net access but would still be crunching in the meantime. I see rare situations like that where you'd go beyond 3-3.5 days. |
