I just finished uninstalling boince on 2 machines. One is an old AMD Athlon running at 1ghz, the other is a one year old laptop running an AMD chip.
----------------------------------------I'm not giving any details since I'm not interested in spending hours of time trying to tweak boinc. I'm posting this solely for the purpose of saying that if you expect people who are not very tech savvy to run this client, then it needs some serious work. I was a programmer for 10 years and have worked with microcomputers since the Timex Sinclair was around. I have no doubt that with the proper guidance and technical assistance, the problems could probably be resolved. The point is I have no interest in do that. For people who are seriously into the software, this will be hard to understand, but I run these agents as a form of charity. I don't NEED to run 6 or 7 computers for my own purposes. So when I install a piece of software like this that is not supposed to interfere with the operation of my machines, and it does, I'm not pleased. Obviously some people are willing to look for logs, tweak the registry, download and configure additional software, etc. But I'm not one of them. Most days it takes me until around dinner time just to get up the mojo to brush my teeth. I have a limited amount of mental, physical and emotional energy to expend and getting boinc to work is way low on my priority list. If you intend to expand your member base, you'll find that most first time DC'ers are going to feel the same way. It's great that this forum exists and that people are so willing to invest their own time in helping others solve their software problems. But for something that is not essential to a person using their computer for the things they need, most people will not invest the time. ![]() ![]() |

You left an important thing out.
How is BOINC interfering? We can't fix it unless you tell us! |

Old? I have BOINC running on a Win98 Intel Pentium III at 0.5GHz. It works best if I suspend network activity unless actually uploading/downloading. Otherwise it freezes now and then. The Genome Comparison project has small workunits and runs well.
----------------------------------------AMD machines usually run extremely well here, and the other 3 computers here are exactly that, although a little faster. [ waiting for "how does it interfere" after you have already left ]
