A hundred thousand years of computer time isn't very much - although that sounds hard to believe. At grid.org we devoted over 45 thousand hours (supposedly) just to the HPF1 paper. The grid.org portion was 43,360 CPUyears, about factor 8,440 of the above number and was excluding the Yeast portion that only ran on WCG (in 3 weeks) :P That was a typo - switching hours and years - I seem to do that a lot for some reason. Apologies. I don't understand the rest of your post though. Do you mean that only 8k + of the 43k + years were used for the yeast/hpf1 paper? I do remember something from Mary at UD saying that other hpf1 results would be used in future papers from Bonneau's lab - is that what you're talking about? Is the 8k part the one that Grorg only ran for 3 weeks? edit-fixed typos, grammar ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Jun 20, 2007 3:43:52 PM] |

The yeast paper was just about yeast - it doesn't even begin to cover the main subject of HPF, which is human proteins. My understanding is that the crunching for the yeast paper failed on grid.org, but was completed successfully and without problems in three weeks at WCG.
----------------------------------------Obviously, a lot more crunching has been done both here and at grid.org since then. Also, after completing the human proteins that HPF covered, they went on to include a load of proteins from other organisms of interest. I may have some facts wrong, this is all pulled together from snippets here and there. edit: The reason they started with yeast is because it is already well studied, and they use it to validate their methodology. Think of it as a control experiment. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 20, 2007 4:14:54 PM] |

@twilyth,
----------------------------------------just reading that 25% of the aspiring teachers are kicked out of the program, because calculus tests are failed miserably, still after an extra year of tutoring.... what happened to simple table exercizes? 43,360 CPU Years X 365 days x 24 hours / 45,000 = 8,440.8 times ;>) The Yeast part was done in 3 weeks.... which if done in Dr. Bonneau's labs was estimated to take 4 years *on the Calendar*.

Alright, if you want to get sarcastic again, it's your grammar that's the problem. I have to read your posts 2 or 3 times to figure out what you're trying to say. Maybe its time for a Berlitz course. Btw - I have taken calculus and it was a breeze - the courses for math majors not the watered down versions. ![]() ![]() |

Sekerob's first language isn't English - he speaks more languages than I care to enumerate. I find his posts are worth that bit of extra effort to read.

That's great, I know Eqyptian hierglypics (rudimentary) - woo-hoo. That doesn't excuse the sarcasm. Maybe I need to complain to the system admin or someone further up the food chain at WCG. You all supposed to be moderators - why don't you try acting the part? hmmm? ![]() ![]() |

"fonetik speling, ok?" unfortunately most people think spelling and grammar are measures of intelligence, while i think they are out-dated junk. |

I know Eqyptian hierglypics (rudimentary) ??? Is this the same as hieroglyphics (when it's not rudimentary, maybe)? ![]() |

Is this the same as hieroglyphics (when it's not rudimentary, maybe)? ![]() Yes, and if you'd like to learn to read Middle Kingdom Egyptian - and not just be able to spell it - try "Egyptian Grammar" by Sir Alan Gardiner (had to special order my copy from Oxford when I got it about 20 years ago). For something more recent but less accessible - no problem for an ace speller I'm sure - try "Middle Egyptian" by James P. Allen. unfortunately most people think spelling and grammar are measures of intelligence, while i think they are out-dated junk This is a forum so I don't criticize anyone for typos and such. I have a spell checker addon for firefox and still make mistakes - especially when I'min a hurry - see comment above for example. However when it's almost impossible to divine the intended meaning of a string of words purporting to be a sentence, that's a bit different. ![]() ![]() |
