This has happened three times so far. I updated to the latest BOINC about two weeks ago after the second one.
Some time last night a faah stopped progressing. The activity monitor showed 95+% system CUP usage. I force quit BOINC and restarted it. Things appear to be running normally now. Genius that I am, I didn't save the message log before restarting. |

In the meantime, save your computer device number to post with the message log next time. That will help the techs figure out what's going on there, if something burps again.
----------------------------------------Unless you are using a version of throttling, I would expect the CPU usage to be near 100% overall.

Well you can work on that. Visit the stdoutdae.txt file in the BOINC program dir and several other txt files. They may contain the messages to our interest. Also can you please tell what exactly you mean with latest BOINC. What version are we talking and what science was running and did u use / not use any graphics (if available for the particular science project).

BOINC is using 95+% when the machine is idle. |

The part of the log you're posted doesn't show any problems. However, you can go to your Results Status page (here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewBoincResults.do ) and find the troublesome work unit. If you click on the status column, it will pop up the error log for that work unit.
There might be something more useful recorded there. |

Curious, you speak of last night, yet the last entry before restart is 16:23. When the GUI looks dead, yet the CPU indicates hi usage, try to kill the GUI only and restart. Possibly the front end lost contact to back end (RPC over port 31416). If you succeed to kill and restart and the process resuming counting as if it never stopped, we know something interferes with the comms between GUI (BOINCmgr) and Daemon (BOINC). 5.8.17 is actually the recommended version for MAC. Get it here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_5.8.17_macOSX_universal.zip

I got 5.8.17. I will install as soon as the current job ends.
The download page for WCG still has 5.8.16 for Macs. |

I have seen this on the three Macs I have crunching: G4 Mac Mini, G4 iBook, and a very old G4 desktop Tower (Sawtooth). Ended up having to detach/reattach all three in the space of a week. No problems on my XP or Win2K laptops.

smut, geopsychic: I refer you both to my earlier post. It would be really useful if we knew a) which project(s) are affected, and b) what happens when it crashes. This will also help us determine whether it is a WCG specific problem, or a BOINC problem.
