jal2 said: Just a thought, is it possible to put a sticky pseudo-thread at the top of every forum which contains recent posts for just that forum? I don't know if the forum software supports this or what the processor overhead would be to support it. retsof replies: Not sure. I saw it all over the place on phpBB forums. This is MVNforum. This particular one was actually fairly small until grid.org pulled the plug. Since a lot of stuff over there went away (and shouldn't have) many wanted to see it appear here. BUMP This question has been addressed at other times in the forums, for example, last year in this thread. To save you the trouble of looking, the version of MVNforum we are running is quite old and stickies are not supported. It is unlikely that it will be upgraded as extensive modifications were necessary to get the software to run in the multiple server environment needed for our community. The project team at the World Community Grid is quite busy with the projects we are running and will run in the future. Since the forum software we are running meets our needs for the most part, I don't think a good business case could be made to justify an upgrade and diverting the project teams efforts. I hope this has bumped the thread appropriately. |

As I'm still fairly new to forums, I'm hoping you might have some insight into this. I have "volunteered" myself to set up some forums at church, so I expect I'll be in a steep learning curve soon as to what does and doesn't work. Just a thought, is it possible to put a sticky pseudo-thread at the top of every forum which contains recent posts for just that forum? I don't know if the forum software supports this or what the processor overhead would be to support it. LOL James is talking about this on the 'new' forum he is going to be making for his church I think he was looking for some advice that he could do to make his choices to put on it and make life easier for him :-) Hugs! Diana edit: oops B*U*M*P heehee I guess that we Community Advisors have a bit of tunnel vision at times. In his response, retsof mentions phpBB forums. From what I've seen, these are pretty good. Not sure about the "stickies" there, but their web site is here. If you Do not wish to set up your own server for it, there are a number of phpBB based free forum hosts out there as well. They are usually free because they attach adverts in banners, etc. It's worth BUMPing over there to take a look. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 2, 2007 5:19:07 AM] |

there's been many a chat about private messaging and sticky's and stuff along the way
----------------------------------------the reply that comes back is that these cannot be included as the forum code runs in resilient mode (i.e. it's a special bit of forum code) and giving up the resilience isn't preferable to having the extra feature. The logic being a working forum is better than no forum at all. I'm sure IBM being IBM should be able to migrate us to the future but in the meantime those extra fora shouldn't be rocket science bump |

Actually, my sticky comment was for both the WCG forums and the one I am supposed to implement. I think the software I have been "blessed" with is ntforum, but I haven't looked up the details yet.
----------------------------------------In retrospect, the ideal solution to a private team forum is for the team to host one on their team site, which means it will be entirely separate from WCG and thus can implement whatever the team wants. Alternately, there are a number of internet sites which will host a forum for you, for a minimal monthly charge, if a given team can't host one themselves. almost forgot, bump. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jal2 at Jul 2, 2007 9:19:32 PM] |

to us all (USA or not).
----------------------------------------They do have a 4th of July in Great Britain. Amazingly, they also call it the 4th of July. I'm starting to wonder why there's no Wales stuff in the Union Jack, though. It's got those 3 crosses for Northern Ireland, Scotland and England on there. Britons Understand My Problem
